What is the STIHL FCB-KM used for?

The STIHL FCB-KM Curved-Shaft Lawn Edger Attachment is a dedicated KombiTool for cutting neat, defined borders between a lawn and adjoining paths, driveways, patios or planting beds.

Unlike a grass strimmer, which uses line to trim surface growth, the FCB-KM uses a vertical 200mm metal blade to cut into the turf edge. This creates a sharper and more clearly defined boundary beside hard landscaping and garden borders.

The FCB-KM connects to an approved loop-handle power unit from the STIHL KombiSystem range. It allows an existing KombiEngine or cordless KombiMotor to be converted into a dedicated lawn-edging machine without purchasing another complete power tool.

Best suited to: maintaining lawn edges beside paths, drives, patios, kerbs, flowerbeds and formal landscaped borders.

Not designed for: cutting paving, concrete, thick woody roots, buried cables or other solid obstructions.

Masseys recommendation: Choose the FCB-KM when you want a manoeuvrable curved-shaft edger for ordinary domestic or professional lawn finishing. For longer, predominantly straight edges where direct shaft alignment is the priority, compare it with the STIHL FCS-KM straight-shaft edger.

Important: this is an attachment only

The STIHL FCB-KM does not include an engine, motor, battery or charger.

It must be connected to an approved STIHL loop-handle KombiEngine or KombiMotor. Suitable power units available from Masseys include selected petrol and cordless models.

For professional landscaping and grounds maintenance, suitable options include:

Compatibility can vary by machine generation and configuration. The power unit must be approved for the FCB-KM and use the correct loop-handle and barrier-bar arrangement. Contact Masseys before ordering if you are uncertain about an older machine.

Key features of the STIHL FCB-KM

Curved shaft for restricted areas

The curved shaft helps the attachment reach around tighter lawn shapes, garden features and restricted areas. It is particularly useful where the edge follows a curve or runs close to planting and hard landscaping.

200mm metal edging blade

The FCB-KM uses a vertical 200mm / 20cm metal edging blade to cut through grass, weeds, soft green growth and the surface of the turf edge.

The blade should be inspected regularly and replaced if it becomes cracked, bent, damaged or too worn to maintain the correct working depth. Damaged metal blades must not be straightened, welded or repaired.

Adjustable cutting-depth wheel

The depth-control wheel allows the operator to alter how deeply the blade enters the lawn edge. This supports a more consistent result across different ground conditions and user heights.

For ordinary edging, adjust the wheel so the blade just touches the ground or enters the soil surface by no more than approximately 5mm. Excessive depth places unnecessary load on the power unit and increases blade wear.

Built-in blade sight

The integrated sight line helps the operator align the metal blade with the intended border. Following the sight while moving steadily forwards makes it easier to create a straighter and more consistent edge.

Protective deflector and skirt

The fitted deflector and skirt help direct cut material away from the operator. The attachment must not be operated with the correct protective components missing, incorrectly positioned or damaged.

Quick KombiSystem connection

The attachment connects to a compatible STIHL power unit through the KombiSystem coupling. This allows the FCB-KM to be fitted and removed without maintaining a separate dedicated engine for lawn edging.

FCB-KM lawn edger or FS-KM grass trimmer?

The FCB-KM and FS-KM can both work around lawn boundaries, but they perform different tasks.

Attachment Main purpose
STIHL FCB-KM Uses a vertical metal blade to create or maintain a defined edge in the turf
STIHL FS-KM Uses mowing line to trim surface grass around edges and obstacles

Choose the FCB-KM when you want a visible cut boundary between the lawn and a path or bed. Choose the STIHL FS-KM grass-trimmer attachment when the main job is cutting grass growing above or across an existing edge.

Many customers use both attachments: the FCB-KM periodically establishes the physical edge, while the FS-KM handles routine grass tidy-ups between edging sessions.

What jobs can the FCB-KM handle?

The FCB-KM is suitable for:

  • Creating defined lawn borders beside paths
  • Maintaining edges along driveways and patios
  • Cutting around planting beds and flower borders
  • Maintaining formal lawn lines
  • Removing grass and soft green growth from an existing edge
  • Restoring edges that have begun to grow over hard surfaces
  • Domestic gardens, estates and professional landscape maintenance

What should the FCB-KM not be used for?

Do not use the FCB-KM to cut:

  • Concrete, paving or kerbstones
  • Large woody roots
  • Wire, metal or fencing
  • Buried electrical cables or irrigation pipes
  • Stones, gravel or other hard obstructions
  • Heavy scrub or woody vegetation

Inspect the proposed edge before starting. Use a suitable pruning or cutting tool where woody roots or hard material need to be removed.

How to achieve a cleaner lawn edge

  1. Clear the route: Remove stones, wire, loose objects and other obstructions.
  2. Check for services: Do not cut where underground cables, lighting wires or irrigation pipes may be present.
  3. Dampen very dry soil: Lightly watering dry ground can soften the surface and reduce dust.
  4. Set the depth wheel: Adjust the blade so it just touches or enters the soil surface by no more than approximately 5mm.
  5. Use the blade sight: Align the sight with the intended edge.
  6. Move steadily forwards: Do not pull the rotating attachment backwards towards yourself.
  7. Do not force the blade: Work at a normal walking pace and allow the blade to cut.
  8. Inspect after use: Clean away soil and plant debris and check the blade for wear or damage.

Masseys expert verdict

The principal reason to choose the FCB-KM is its ability to add a proper vertical lawn-edging blade to a KombiSystem power unit you already own.

A strimmer can tidy grass growing across a path, but it does not create the same sharply cut turf boundary as a dedicated metal edger. The FCB-KM is therefore particularly useful in gardens where paths, driveways and planting beds are intended to have clearly defined borders.

The curved shaft makes it the more manoeuvrable option where the garden includes curved beds, restricted corners and features that interrupt the edge line. Customers maintaining long, predominantly straight runs should also consider the FCS-KM.

The main purchase consideration is compatibility. This is not a complete machine and should only be paired with an approved loop-handle KombiEngine or KombiMotor.

What size blade does the FCB-KM use?

The FCB-KM uses a 200mm / 20cm metal edging blade.

Is the FCB-KM blade 30cm?

No. The approved STIHL blade for the FCB-KM is 200mm / 20cm in diameter.

Which STIHL KombiEngines fit the FCB-KM?

It fits approved loop-handle STIHL KombiEngines and KombiMotors. Examples include suitable KM 56 R, KM 94 R, KM 131 R, KMA 80 R, KMA 120 R and KMA 135 R models. Confirm compatibility for the exact machine generation before ordering.

Can I use the FCB-KM with a bike-handle power unit?

The FCB-KM is specified for approved loop-handle KombiEngines and KombiMotors. Do not assume that a bike-handle machine is compatible.

How deep should the FCB-KM blade cut?

For normal lawn edging, set the guide wheel so the blade just touches or enters the soil surface by no more than approximately 5mm.

Can the FCB-KM create a new lawn edge?

Yes. It can create or restore a boundary through grass, turf and soft green growth, provided the route is clear of hard objects, buried services and substantial woody roots.

Can it edge beside a driveway or path?

Yes. Edging beside paths, driveways and planting beds is one of its principal uses. Keep the metal blade away from the hard surface to avoid damage and excessive wear.

What is the difference between the FCB-KM and FCS-KM?

The FCB-KM has a curved shaft that helps with access around tighter areas and shaped borders. The FCS-KM has a straight shaft that assists guidance along longer straight edges.

What is the difference between the FCB-KM and FS-KM?

The FCB-KM uses a vertical metal blade to cut and define the turf edge. The FS-KM uses mowing line to trim grass around edges and obstacles.

Can the FCB-KM cut tree roots?

It is not intended for large or woody roots. Remove substantial roots using appropriate pruning equipment rather than forcing the edging blade through them.

Can the edging blade be sharpened?

STIHL instructs users not to resharpen the approved edging blade. Replace it when it is damaged, excessively worn or no longer provides sufficient ground clearance and cutting depth.

Safe operation

Read the FCB-KM manual and the manual for the connected power unit before use.

  • Wear suitable eye, hearing, hand, leg and foot protection
  • Keep other people and animals at least 15 metres away while operating
  • Inspect the route for stones, wire, glass, metal and other objects
