Description
Is the STIHL KMA 120 R right for you?
The STIHL KMA 120 R Cordless KombiMotor is a professional battery-powered multi-tool engine for landscaping, grounds maintenance, estate work and demanding garden care.
It forms the power unit at the centre of the STIHL KombiSystem. Instead of purchasing a separate motor for every job, you can fit compatible KombiTool attachments for grass trimming, brushcutting, hedge maintenance, pruning, leaf clearing, lawn edging, sweeping and soil cultivation.
The KMA 120 R is part of STIHL’s professional 36V battery range. STIHL now also uses the ALLPRO name for its developing professional battery platform, while compatible existing AP batteries and tools remain supported.
Best suited to: professional landscapers, grounds teams, facilities managers, local authorities, estate owners and demanding users who need one power unit for several regular maintenance tasks.
Not included: battery, charger and KombiTool attachment.
Masseys recommendation: Choose the KMA 120 R when you need a professional cordless KombiMotor with more workload capacity than the domestic KMA 80 R, but do not require the additional speed level and top-end specification of the KMA 135 R.

What is included?
- 1 × STIHL KMA 120 R cordless KombiMotor power unit
- 1 × Basic shoulder harness
- Adjustable loop handle with barrier bar
- Quick-release KombiTool coupling
The following items are not included:
- STIHL AP/ALLPRO battery
- Battery charger
- KombiTool working attachment
A battery, charger and working attachment must be selected separately before the machine can be used.
What jobs can the KMA 120 R perform?
The KMA 120 R can operate compatible STIHL KombiTools for:
- Grass trimming around borders, walls and obstacles
- Cutting long grass and heavier weeds
- Trimming tall hedges and wide shrubs
- Pruning overhead branches
- Clearing leaves and grass cuttings
- Defining lawn and path edges
- Cultivating beds and loosening soil
- Sweeping paths, yards and hard surfaces
- Cutting low shrubs and ground cover
One motor can therefore replace several separate powered machines where the jobs can be completed using compatible KombiSystem attachments.
Key features of the STIHL KMA 120 R
Professional 36V AP/ALLPRO battery system
The KMA 120 R accepts compatible batteries from the STIHL professional AP/ALLPRO battery range.
The battery fits directly into the power-unit housing, creating a self-contained setup without a cable or external battery belt for normal handheld use.
Existing compatible AP batteries can also be shared with many STIHL professional chainsaws, brushcutters, hedge trimmers, blowers, pole pruners, mowers and other cordless machinery.
Two selectable power levels
The operating handle provides two selectable speed levels:
- Level 1 – ECO: reduces speed and energy consumption for lighter tasks and attachments.
- Level 2 – full power: provides increased output for attachments and working conditions that require more performance.
The trigger also allows the operating speed to be varied within the selected level, helping the user match output to the attachment and material.
Constant-power EC motor
The efficient brushless EC motor requires less routine maintenance than a petrol engine and provides consistent power as the battery charge falls.
There is no fuel mixing, carburettor maintenance or pull-cord starting, and the machine produces no exhaust fumes during operation.
Quick-release KombiTool coupling
The quick-release coupling allows a compatible KombiTool to be connected and removed without specialist tools.
Insert the attachment shaft into the coupling, align it correctly and secure it using the clamping screw. This makes it practical to change between several jobs during the same working day.
Detachable shaft
The shaft separates at the KombiTool coupling, making the power unit easier to carry and store. It can be transported in a smaller vehicle or stored without requiring the full assembled machine length.
Adjustable loop handle with barrier bar
The loop handle can be adjusted to suit the user and working position. It provides good manoeuvrability around trees, borders, slopes and confined spaces.
The barrier bar helps maintain separation between the operator’s legs and suitable cutting attachments.
IPX4 splash-water protection
The KMA 120 R has IPX4 splash-water protection when correctly assembled and used with suitable compatible equipment.
IPX4 does not mean the machine or battery is waterproof. Do not immerse the equipment or clean it using a pressure washer.
Basic harness included
A basic harness is supplied with the power unit. Using a correctly adjusted harness can improve support and control, particularly with heavier or longer attachments.
For extended hedge trimming or pruning, customers can also consider the STIHL RTS Super Harness.
Which KombiTools fit the KMA 120 R?
The KMA 120 R is compatible with current STIHL KombiTools except the FSB-KM bent-shaft strimmer attachment.
Popular compatible attachments available from Masseys include:
- STIHL FS-KM strimmer attachment – for lawn edges and general grass trimming
- STIHL MB-KM brushcutter attachment – for long grass and heavier vegetation
- STIHL HL-KM 145° hedge-trimmer attachment – for tall hedges, wide shrubs and angled cutting
- STIHL FH-KM shrub-cutter attachment – for ground cover, low shrubs and controlled cutting
- STIHL HT-KM pole-pruner attachment – for pruning overhead branches
- STIHL BG-KM blower attachment – for leaves, grass cuttings and loose debris

Battery options for the STIHL KMA 120 R
Battery choice should be based on the attachment, expected workload, required runtime and acceptable machine weight.
STIHL AP 200 S
The STIHL AP 200 S battery is the lightest of the three principal battery choices shown below. It is particularly useful when reduced handheld weight is important or when the machine will be used mainly with hedge-trimming and lighter attachments.
STIHL AP 300 S
The STIHL AP 300 S battery offers a strong balance of runtime, weight and cost for mixed professional KombiSystem work.
For many contractors using several different attachments, this is the most practical all-round battery choice.
STIHL AP 500 S
The STIHL AP 500 S battery provides the longest handheld working times of these three options, but it is also the heaviest and most expensive.
It is most useful where reducing battery changes is more important than minimising machine weight.

Cordless or petrol KombiEngine?
Choose the KMA 120 R when you want:
- Low-noise operation
- No exhaust fumes during use
- No fuel mixing
- Push-button starting
- Lower routine motor maintenance
- Compatibility with existing professional STIHL batteries
A petrol machine may remain more suitable when battery charging is impractical, the machine will be used continuously in remote locations or an established petrol KombiSystem setup is already in place.
For heavier petrol-powered work, compare the STIHL KM 131 R petrol KombiEngine.
Masseys expert verdict
The KMA 120 R occupies an important middle position in STIHL’s cordless KombiSystem range.
It offers the professional AP/ALLPRO battery platform and broad KombiTool compatibility without requiring every user to move to the higher-spec KMA 135 R.
For contractors and grounds teams carrying out a mixture of trimming, hedge cutting, pruning, blowing and edging, the KMA 120 R provides a flexible single-motor system with meaningful working times when matched to the correct AP battery.
The principal buying decision is not simply which motor to choose. It is the combination of motor, battery and attachment. An AP 200 S may be preferable for lengthy hedge work where lower weight matters, while an AP 300 S or AP 500 S may be more appropriate for energy-intensive blowing or brushcutting.
The KMA 120 R should not be purchased for use with the FSB-KM attachment, and customers completing only occasional domestic garden maintenance should also compare the lower-cost KMA 80 R.
