Description
Is the STIHL KMA 200 R right for you?
The STIHL KMA 200 R Cordless KombiMotor is the highest-performance cordless power unit in the STIHL KombiSystem range. It is designed for professional landscapers, grounds-maintenance teams, local authorities, estates and demanding users who want one battery-powered motor for several different outdoor maintenance jobs.
Compatible KombiTool attachments allow the KMA 200 R to be converted for hedge trimming, pruning, grass cutting, scrub cutting, edging, blowing, cultivating and surface cleaning. Instead of maintaining a separate powered machine for every task, operators can use one professional motor and change the working attachment.
The KMA 200 R provides 50% more power and a 12% higher maximum rotational speed than the KMA 135 R. This additional performance makes it particularly valuable when operating demanding attachments or working in heavier vegetation.
Best suited to: professional landscaping, commercial grounds maintenance, estate work, local-authority contracts, facilities management and intensive private use.
Not designed primarily for: occasional maintenance of a small domestic garden. Customers completing lighter garden work should also compare the STIHL KMA 80 R or STIHL KMA 120 R.

- Trimming grass around borders, walls and obstacles
- Cutting long grass and heavier vegetation
- Maintaining tall, wide or difficult-to-reach hedges
- Pruning elevated branches from ground level
- Clearing leaves, grass cuttings and light debris
- Defining lawn, path and border edges
- Cutting low shrubs and ground cover
- Cultivating beds and loosening compacted soil
- Sweeping paths, yards and paved areas
- Removing weeds from sensitive or hard surfaces with a suitable attachment

Important KMA 200 R attachment compatibility
The KMA 200 R is compatible with the current STIHL KombiTool range, with two important exceptions:
- Do not use the STIHL FS-KM attachment.
- Do not use the STIHL FSB-KM attachment.
For mowing and grass-trimming work, the KMA 200 R must be fitted with the newer STIHL FSS-KM attachment. The FSS-KM has a 45 cm cutting diameter and is designed to meet the operating and noise requirements of this higher-performance KombiMotor.
Do not assume that an attachment is compatible simply because it fits another STIHL KombiEngine. Contact Masseys with the exact attachment model if you need compatibility confirmed before ordering.
Popular KombiTools for the KMA 200 R
STIHL HL-KM 145° hedge trimmer
The STIHL HL-KM 145° long-reach hedge trimmer is suitable for cutting tall hedges, wide hedge faces and low-growing shrubs. Its adjustable cutting head allows the blade angle to be adapted for hedge sides, tops and difficult positions.
STIHL HT-KM pole pruner
The STIHL HT-KM pole-pruner attachment converts the KMA 200 R into a long-reach pruning saw for cutting elevated branches, removing deadwood and maintaining garden or orchard trees from ground level.
STIHL BG-KM blower
The STIHL BG-KM blower attachment can be used to clear fallen leaves, grass clippings and loose debris from paths, patios, borders and other outdoor areas.
STIHL RG-KM rotary cutting head
The STIHL RG-KM rotary cutting head is designed for low-spin removal of weeds and grass from gravel, asphalt and paved surfaces. Confirm current KMA 200 R compatibility with Masseys before ordering, particularly where an existing product listing refers only to earlier KombiMotor models.
STIHL’s most powerful cordless KombiMotor
The KMA 200 R is designed for users who have previously needed a high-output petrol KombiEngine to complete their most demanding work.
Compared with the KMA 135 R, the KMA 200 R provides 50% more power and a 12% increase in maximum rotational speed. This gives demanding attachments more performance when cutting heavy growth, moving debris or completing intensive professional work.
The power increase does not mean that full speed must be used for every task. Three selectable settings allow the operator to match output and energy use to the attachment and material being worked on.
Three selectable operating speeds
The control handle provides three speed settings:
| Setting | Maximum speed | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | 6,300 rpm | Lighter work and improved battery efficiency |
| Level 2 | 8,200 rpm | General professional work across mixed tasks |
| Level 3 | 9,500 rpm | Maximum performance for demanding attachments and conditions |
The variable-speed trigger allows the operator to control speed within the selected level. This is useful when moving between delicate work and heavier cutting without repeatedly stopping to change settings.
Constant power as the battery discharges
STIHL Constant Power electronics are designed to maintain consistent motor performance as the battery charge level falls. This prevents the attachment speed from progressively fading during use in the way that can occur with less advanced cordless equipment.
The machine will still stop when the battery reaches its discharge limit, but the operator should experience consistent working performance through the usable charge.
Brushless EC motor
The KMA 200 R uses a high-efficiency brushless EC motor. Unlike a conventional brushed motor, it does not require carbon brushes to transfer electrical current to the rotating motor components.
This design provides efficient power transfer, low routine motor maintenance and a long service life when the machine is operated and maintained correctly.
Quick-adjust loop handle
The updated loop handle uses a quick-mounting adjustment system. This allows the handle position to be adapted to the operator’s height and the attachment being used without a lengthy adjustment process.
The loop-handle configuration provides useful manoeuvrability when working:
- On slopes and uneven ground
- Around trees and landscape features
- Between obstacles
- Along hedge lines and borders
- In confined maintenance areas
A barrier bar helps maintain separation between the operator and suitable cutting attachments.
Adjustable harness point
The harness attachment point can be repositioned to help balance the complete machine. This is important because the working balance changes according to:
- The KombiTool being used
- The selected battery
- Any approved extension shaft
- The operator’s height and working position
A basic shoulder harness is supplied. Operators regularly using long or heavier attachments may benefit from an upgraded harness such as the STIHL RTS Super Harness, subject to attachment and application suitability.
Metal mesh air filter
A removable metal mesh air filter helps prevent excessive dust and debris from entering the motor’s cooling airflow. Effective cooling supports consistent performance and protects the motor during demanding work.
The filter is designed to be removed and cleaned. It should be inspected more frequently when the KMA 200 R is used in dry, dusty or debris-heavy environments.
IPX4 splash-water protection
The KMA 200 R has an IPX4 rating and is designed for professional outdoor use in changeable working conditions, including exposure to splash water.
IPX4 does not mean the machine is waterproof. It must not be submerged, cleaned with a pressure washer or stored outdoors in wet conditions. Always follow the battery and machine instructions when working in rain or damp environments.
STIHL connected fleet management
The KMA 200 R can be integrated with STIHL connected using the appropriate Smart Connector setup. This allows professional operators and fleet managers to record information such as operating hours, equipment age and maintenance status.
Fleet data can be reviewed through the STIHL connected app or portal, helping businesses plan maintenance and monitor how often different machines are being used.
Which battery is best for the STIHL KMA 200 R?
The KMA 200 R accepts compatible batteries from the STIHL professional ALLPRO/AP battery system.
There is no single best battery for every KombiTool. The appropriate choice depends on the attachment, required working time and the total weight the operator wants to carry.
STIHL AP 200 S
The STIHL AP 200 S battery is the lightest of the commonly selected professional batteries. It can be a sensible option for long periods of hedge trimming or pruning, where reducing total handheld weight may be more important than achieving the longest possible runtime.
STIHL AP 300 S
The STIHL AP 300 S battery provides a strong balance between capacity, weight and cost. Masseys considers it the most versatile all-round choice for contractors who will operate several different KombiTool attachments.
STIHL AP 500 S
The STIHL AP 500 S battery gives the longest handheld working times of the three batteries. It is particularly useful for energy-intensive applications or when reducing battery changes is more important than minimising machine weight.
The AP 500 S is also the heaviest and most expensive option. For prolonged hedge work, some operators may prefer to rotate lighter batteries rather than carry the largest battery continuously.
Indicative battery working times
Working time varies substantially according to the attachment and selected speed. The same battery may provide a long working period with a hedge-trimmer attachment but a much shorter working time when powering a blower or pole pruner at maximum output.
| Attachment | AP 200 S | AP 300 S | AP 500 S |
|---|---|---|---|
| HL-KM hedge trimmer | Approx. 31–55 minutes | Approx. 48–84 minutes | Approx. 57–99 minutes |
| FH-KM scrub cutter | Approx. 31–55 minutes | Approx. 48–84 minutes | Approx. 57–99 minutes |
| BG-KM blower | Approx. 7–24 minutes | Approx. 11–37 minutes | Approx. 14–44 minutes |
| HT-KM pole pruner | Approx. 7–24 minutes | Approx. 11–37 minutes | Approx. 14–44 minutes |
| KB-KM bristle brush | Approx. 19–27 minutes | Approx. 30–42 minutes | Approx. 35–50 minutes |
| BF-KM cultivator | Approx. 24–37 minutes | Approx. 37–56 minutes | Approx. 44–66 minutes |
These figures are approximate. Actual working time depends on the selected speed, material, attachment, technique, battery temperature, battery condition and environmental conditions.
Choose a suitable model from the STIHL battery charger range. Professional users rotating several batteries should consider a quick charger or the AL 301-4 multi-battery charger.

A petrol KombiEngine may remain more practical when charging facilities are unavailable, work takes place continuously in remote areas or the operator already owns a substantial petrol-based equipment setup.
Why Masseys recommends the STIHL KMA 200 R
At Masseys, we recommend the KMA 200 R to professional users who want the flexibility of the STIHL KombiSystem without accepting a significant reduction in performance compared with their high-output petrol equipment.
The additional power over the KMA 135 R is particularly valuable when using attachments such as the blower, pole pruner, cultivator and heavy-duty cutting tools. Three operating levels also mean that the motor does not need to run at maximum speed during every job.
We would not automatically recommend the KMA 200 R to every KombiSystem customer. The lighter and less expensive KMA 120 R will be sufficient for many professional gardeners, while the domestic KMA 80 R is usually more appropriate for ordinary home garden maintenance.
The KMA 200 R is the model we recommend when:
- The machine will be used commercially or very frequently
- Maximum attachment performance is a genuine priority
- The user already owns professional STIHL batteries
- Low-noise working is important
- Several different professional tasks will be completed using one motor
- The buyer understands the KMA 200 R’s specific attachment restrictions
Masseys can help build the complete package around the work being completed, rather than simply supplying the largest battery and most expensive attachments.

The KMA 200 R has IPX4 splash-water protection and is designed for professional outdoor use in changeable conditions. It is not waterproof and must not be immersed, pressure washed or stored exposed to rain.
Is the KMA 200 R suitable for professional use?
Yes. It is specifically designed for professional gardening, landscaping and grounds-maintenance work. Its high-output EC motor, three speed settings, serviceable air filter and STIHL connected compatibility support frequent commercial use.
Is the KMA 200 R suitable for homeowners?
It can be used by estate owners and demanding private users, but it will be more powerful and expensive than most homeowners require. The KMA 80 R or KMA 120 R will normally provide better value for routine domestic garden maintenance.
Can the KMA 200 R be separated for transport?
Yes. The KombiTool is released from the motor using the coupling system, allowing the motor and attachment to be transported or stored separately.
Does the KMA 200 R replace a petrol KombiEngine?
For many professional users, it can replace a petrol power unit for compatible tasks. Whether it is the better choice depends on battery availability, working duration, attachment requirements and access to charging facilities.
Safe operation
Read the STIHL instruction manual and the instructions supplied with each KombiTool before use. Wear the protective equipment specified for the selected attachment and inspect the work area for people, animals, stones, wire and other hazards.
Remove the battery before fitting, removing, cleaning or inspecting an attachment. Only use approved combinations of motor, attachment, guard, cutting equipment, harness and extension shaft.
