The STIHL HTA 86 is a professional cordless telescopic pole pruner for maintaining trees, orchards and larger properties without using a petrol engine or mains cable.

Its rigid square telescopic shaft adjusts from approximately 270cm to 390cm, providing 120cm of tool-free length adjustment. The machine uses a compact cutting head with a 30cm / 12-inch guide bar and STIHL ¼-inch PM3 saw chain.

If you only need a fixed-length shaft, the STIHL HTA 66 pole pruner offers the same battery platform and a simpler, fixed-shaft layout.

For heavier professional cutting and more demanding orchard or tree-maintenance work, consider the STIHL HTA 135 telescopic pole pruner.

Telescopic shaft adjustable from 270cm to 390cm

The rigid square shaft can be extended or shortened by approximately 120cm using the quick-release twist clamp.

Shortening the tool improves transport, storage and control during lower pruning work. Extending it provides additional reach for elevated branches.

STIHL states that the tool and branch hook can assist with the removal of loose branches at heights of up to approximately five metres. Actual working reach depends on the operator’s height, stance, cutting angle and site conditions.

The shaft should be adjusted only when the machine is switched off and the cutting attachment has stopped completely.

0.85kW cordless cutting performance

The HTA 86 delivers 0.85kW of mechanical output through an efficient STIHL EC motor.

STIHL Constant Power electronics help maintain consistent cutting performance as the battery charge falls. The machine does not gradually lose cutting output simply because the battery is approaching the end of its charge.

The brushless motor avoids several petrol-engine maintenance requirements because there is no fuel mixture, carburettor, spark plug or pull-start mechanism.

This does not make the pole pruner maintenance-free. The guide bar, saw chain, tensioning mechanism, sprocket area and lubrication system still require regular attention.

30cm guide bar and STIHL PM3 chain

The cutting head is fitted with a 30cm / 12-inch guide bar and a STIHL ¼-inch Picco Micro 3 saw chain.

The narrow chain is designed to produce a controlled, precise cut with relatively low vibration. The compact power head also improves visibility when positioning the chain among branches.

The 30cm guide-bar length should not be interpreted as a universal maximum branch diameter. Whether a branch is suitable depends on its species, condition, location, movement and whether it can fall without creating a hazard.

STIHL Cut Kit 6 contains a compatible 30cm replacement guide bar and two ¼-inch P PM3 chains for the HTA 86.

Integrated branch hook

A sturdy branch hook is built into the cutting head. It can help pull down loose or cut material after a branch has been separated.

Plan the fall path before cutting and never stand directly beneath the branch being cut or removed.

Battery options and working time

The HTA 86 accepts compatible batteries from STIHL’s professional ALLPRO/AP platform.

These figures are measured under controlled conditions rather than guaranteed job times. Actual runtime depends on:

• Branch diameter and timber density
• Whether the wood is green, dead or decayed
• Chain sharpness and lubrication
• Battery temperature and condition
• Cutting technique
• The amount of repositioning between cuts

Automatic chain lubrication

The HTA 86 automatically supplies lubricant to the guide bar and moving chain during operation.

A transparent tank makes it easier to monitor the remaining chain-oil level, while the tool-free cap allows the tank to be refilled without a separate tool.

Chain oil is not included and must be added before the machine is used.

Balanced professional handling

The battery position is designed to balance the cutting head and reduce the tendency for the tool to tip forward during appropriate pruning work.

The control handle uses a self-resetting lock, variable-speed trigger and additional ERGO lever. It can be operated by left- or right-handed users.

A shoulder harness or compatible harness system can help distribute the weight during longer jobs. Always use accessories approved for the HTA 86.

IPX4 splashwater protection

The HTA 86 is IPX4 rated for protection against splashing water from different directions.
