The STIHL MS 194 T petrol chainsaw is a professional top-handle saw for trained arborists carrying out aerial pruning, crown maintenance and tree removals. Its 31.8 cm³ STIHL 2-MIX engine produces 1.40 kW / 1.90 hp, providing a useful balance between the exceptionally light MS 151 TC-E and the more powerful MS 201 TC-M.
The MS 194 T is designed for professional work within the canopy. It is well suited to deadwood removal, crown reductions, crown lifts and planned medium-tree removals where a compact petrol saw with greater output than an ultra-light pruning model is required.
Professional-use restriction: The MS 194 T is a specialist top-handle tree-maintenance chainsaw for appropriately trained arborists. It is not intended for ordinary ground-based chainsaw work or untrained domestic use. Evidence of suitable competence or certification may be requested before fulfilment.

Who is the STIHL MS 194 T designed for?
The MS 194 T is designed for professional arborists who have been trained to use a top-handle chainsaw during off-ground tree work. Its combination of manageable weight and 1.40 kW output makes it suitable for work that requires more performance than a lightweight fine-pruning saw without moving to STIHL’s highest-output petrol top-handle model.
Typical professional applications include:
- Deadwood removal
- Crown thinning and selective branch removal
- Crown reductions and crown lifts
- Removing stem and trunk shoots
- Planned dismantling of suitable sections
- Medium-sized tree removals
- Professional tree maintenance from an appropriate climbing or MEWP system
The MS 194 T is not a domestic garden chainsaw and must not be used as a substitute for an appropriate rear-handle saw during ordinary ground work.
For ground-based cutting, firewood preparation or general property maintenance, choose a suitable model from our STIHL petrol chainsaw range.
Choosing the 12-inch or 14-inch version
| Guide-bar option | Best suited to | Product identification |
|---|---|---|
| 30 cm / 12-inch | Greater manoeuvrability and a lighter cutting attachment for detailed aerial work | Verify the current MPN and GTIN from Masseys’ STIHL dealer system or the physical box |
| 35 cm / 14-inch | Additional cutting reach for larger aerial branches and planned removals | STIHL part number 11372000312 |
Both configurations use the same 31.8 cm³ powerhead. A longer guide bar provides additional reach but does not increase engine output.
Check the selected variation, product image, MPN and guide-bar markings before ordering replacement cutting equipment.
31.8 cm³ STIHL 2-MIX engine
The STIHL 2-MIX engine produces 1.40 kW / 1.90 hp and approximately 1.5 Nm of torque. Compared with the previous MS 193 TC-E, STIHL quotes 9% more power and 7% more torque.
The engine is designed to provide useful professional output while maintaining the compact size required from a tree-maintenance chainsaw. It uses STIHL MotoMix or a fresh 50:1 mixture of suitable petrol and quality two-stroke engine oil.
STIHL ElastoStart
The MS 194 T uses STIHL ElastoStart rather than ErgoStart or “Easy2Start”. The specially designed starter handle contains a damping element that absorbs compression peaks generated during starting.
This helps smooth the starting action and reduces abrupt loading through the operator’s hand, arm and shoulder.
Manual fuel pump
The manual fuel pump helps draw fuel into the carburettor before starting. Operating the pump several times reduces the number of starter strokes required, particularly after a longer break or when the fuel system has been emptied.
1/4-inch P cutting system
The MS 194 T uses a 1/4″ P cutting system designed to provide a fast, precise cut for professional tree-maintenance work.
The exact chain drive-link count depends on the selected guide-bar configuration. Check the markings stamped on the fitted guide bar or ask Masseys to identify the correct replacement before ordering.
Side-mounted chain tensioning
The chain-tensioning screw is accessed from the side of the sprocket cover. This arrangement provides protected access and helps keep the operator’s hands away from the sharp chain during adjustment.
The MS 194 T does not have tool-free Quick Chain Tensioning. A suitable combination tool is required to adjust or replace the cutting attachment.
Captive sprocket-cover nuts
The sprocket-cover nuts are captive, meaning they remain attached to the cover when it is removed. This reduces the risk of dropping or losing a nut while maintaining the chainsaw in the tree or at the work site.
Fold-out suspension hook
The integrated fold-out hook allows the chainsaw to be connected to an appropriate suspension rope during professional aerial work. It can be folded away when not in use so that it does not interfere with handling or storage.
The saw attachment and climbing arrangement must form part of the arborist’s planned, risk-assessed working system.
STIHL anti-vibration system
Buffer and spring elements reduce the amount of engine vibration transmitted to the handles. This improves comfort during professional use, although it does not replace correct technique, task planning or appropriate breaks.
Carburettor compensator
The carburettor compensator helps maintain engine output, fuel consumption and exhaust quality as the air filter gradually collects dirt. This allows longer working intervals before filter contamination produces a noticeable reduction in performance.
The air filter must still be inspected and maintained in accordance with STIHL’s operating instructions.
Tool-free fuel and oil caps
The fuel and chain-oil tanks use bayonet-style caps that can be opened and closed without a separate tool.
- Fuel-tank capacity: approximately 270 ml
- Chain-oil capacity: approximately 220 ml
Engine fuel and chain lubricant are separate. The engine requires STIHL MotoMix or an accurate 50:1 petrol and two-stroke oil mixture, while the guide bar and chain require suitable chainsaw lubricant.

Masseys recommendation
The MS 194 T is the strongest all-round choice in STIHL’s petrol top-handle range for arborists who find the MS 151 TC-E too specialised towards minimum weight but do not require the additional output and cost of the MS 201 TC-M.
Choose the shorter cutting attachment where manoeuvrability and lower cutting-attachment weight are priorities. Choose the 14-inch version where additional reach is required for larger aerial branches and planned removals.
Arborists moving towards cordless equipment should compare the MSA 190 T, which offers similar performance without fuel mixing or direct exhaust emissions during use.

Professional safety and competence
Top-handle chainsaws are specialist arboricultural tools capable of causing serious or fatal injury. The MS 194 T should only be supplied to and operated by people trained in top-handle chainsaw use and aerial tree work.
The saw should normally be held and controlled with both hands. One-handed use increases the risk of loss of control and should not be promoted as a normal operating method.
Aerial tree work must be properly planned and risk assessed, with suitable access, work-positioning, rescue and emergency arrangements. Follow the STIHL operating manual, current workplace requirements and recognised arboricultural guidance.
Use an appropriate rear-handle chainsaw for ordinary ground-based cutting.
Frequently asked questions
Who is the STIHL MS 194 T intended for?
It is intended for trained arborists and professional tree-care users carrying out aerial pruning, crown work and tree removals.
Can the MS 194 T be used for ordinary ground work?
No. STIHL’s operating manual identifies it as a tree-service chainsaw for work in the crown of a standing tree. An appropriate rear-handle chainsaw should be used for general ground-based cutting.
Can the MS 194 T be used with one hand?
The chainsaw should normally be held firmly with both hands. STIHL’s manual only permits one-handed operation in narrowly defined circumstances where two-handed cutting is impossible and all stated safety conditions can be met. It should not be marketed as a one-handed chainsaw.
Does the MS 194 T have ErgoStart or Easy2Start?
No. It uses STIHL ElastoStart, a damped starter handle that helps absorb compression peaks during starting. It also has a manual fuel pump.
How much does the MS 194 T weigh?
The powerhead weighs approximately 3.3 kg without fuel, guide bar or saw chain. The complete working weight depends on the selected cutting attachment, fuel and chain oil.
How powerful is the MS 194 T?
The 31.8 cm³ STIHL 2-MIX engine produces 1.40 kW / 1.90 hp and approximately 1.5 Nm of torque.
Should I choose the 12-inch or 14-inch version?
The 12-inch configuration offers greater manoeuvrability and lower cutting-attachment weight. The 14-inch version provides additional reach. Retain the 12-inch option only where its current STIHL product identifiers and stock have been verified.
Does the MS 194 T have tool-free chain tensioning?
No. It uses side-mounted chain tensioning and requires the appropriate combination tool. Its captive sprocket-cover nuts reduce the risk of losing the nuts during maintenance.
What fuel does the MS 194 T use?
Use STIHL MotoMix or a fresh 50:1 mixture of suitable petrol and quality two-stroke engine oil. Never use straight petrol.
Does it need separate chain oil?
Yes. Suitable chainsaw lubricant must be added to the separate 220 ml chain-oil tank.
What chain does the MS 194 T use?
It uses a 1/4″ P cutting system. The exact chain length and drive-link count depend on the selected guide bar, so check the bar markings before ordering.
Can Masseys service the MS 194 T?
Yes. Our workshop can provide servicing, inspection, repairs, chain maintenance and genuine replacement-parts support for the professional machinery brands we supply.
