Description
The STIHL MS 151 TC-E petrol chainsaw is a specialist professional top-handle saw designed for trained arborists carrying out aerial pruning and tree maintenance. At approximately 2.6 kg without fuel, guide bar or chain, it is STIHL’s lightest petrol top-handle chainsaw.
Its 23.6 cm³ STIHL 2-MIX engine produces 1.10 kW / 1.50 hp. The compact powerhead, fine-cutting 1/4″ P PM3 chain and carefully balanced top-handle design make it particularly suitable for crown maintenance, deadwood removal and controlled pruning within the canopy.
Professional-use restriction: The MS 151 TC-E is intended for trained arborists carrying out off-ground tree work. It is not a general-purpose domestic or ground-work chainsaw. Evidence of suitable professional competence or certification may be requested before fulfilment.

Who is the MS 151 TC-E designed for?
The MS 151 TC-E is designed specifically for suitably trained arborists and tree-care professionals. Its compact top-handle layout is intended for specialist aerial work where low weight, precise positioning and manoeuvrability are critical.
Typical professional applications include:
- Selective pruning within the canopy
- Deadwood removal
- Crown maintenance and crown thinning
- Removing suitable small branches during planned tree work
- Detailed arboricultural cutting where a narrow kerf is beneficial
- Working from an appropriate rope-and-harness or MEWP system
The MS 151 TC-E should not be promoted as a domestic garden chainsaw or used as a substitute for an appropriate rear-handle saw during ground-based cutting.
For normal ground work, firewood preparation or domestic garden maintenance, choose a suitable model from our STIHL petrol chainsaw range.
Choosing the 10-inch or 12-inch version
| Guide-bar option | Best suited to | Product number |
|---|---|---|
| 25 cm / 10-inch | Minimum cutting-attachment weight, detailed pruning and maximum manoeuvrability | 11462000056 |
| 30 cm / 12-inch | Arborists requiring additional reach while retaining a lightweight powerhead | 11462000057 |
Both versions use the same 23.6 cm³ engine and 1.10 kW powerhead. The longer guide bar does not increase engine output; it provides additional reach and adds some cutting-attachment weight.
Select the exact option displayed above. Check the selected variation, product image and package identifiers before ordering replacement guide bars or chains.
23.6 cm³ STIHL 2-MIX engine
The 23.6 cm³ STIHL 2-MIX engine produces 1.10 kW / 1.50 hp. Updates to the cylinder, piston and exhaust provide useful cutting performance while retaining the very low weight that defines the MS 151 TC-E.
The engine uses STIHL MotoMix or a fresh 50:1 mixture of suitable petrol and quality two-stroke engine oil. Straight petrol must never be used.
STIHL ErgoStart
STIHL ErgoStart reduces the effort and starter-rope speed required to start the engine. A spring between the starter mechanism and crankshaft allows the operator to use a smoother, more controlled pull rather than a fast, forceful action.
This is particularly useful on an arborist saw that may be stopped and restarted repeatedly during a planned tree-maintenance operation.
Manual fuel pump
The manual fuel pump helps draw fuel into the carburettor before starting. Pressing the bulb several times can reduce the number of starter pulls required, especially after a longer period without use or after the fuel tank has been emptied.
1/4-inch P PM3 cutting system
The MS 151 TC-E uses a fine-cutting 1/4″ P Picco Micro 3 saw chain. Its narrow kerf makes efficient use of the compact engine’s output and supports clean, controlled pruning cuts.
The exact replacement chain depends on the selected guide-bar length, gauge and drive-link count. Check the markings stamped on the fitted guide bar or contact Masseys before ordering replacement cutting equipment.
Side-mounted chain tensioning
The chain-tensioning screw is accessed from the side of the sprocket cover. This arrangement provides protected access while helping keep the operator’s hands away from the sharp chain during adjustment.
Switch off the engine, engage the chain brake and follow the STIHL operating instructions before inspecting or adjusting the cutting attachment.
Fold-out suspension hook
The integrated fold-out hook allows the saw to be attached to an appropriate suspension system during professional aerial work. It can be folded away when it is not required so that it does not interfere with handling or storage.
Any saw attachment, climbing and work-positioning arrangement must form part of the arborist’s established safe working system and site-specific risk assessment.
Anti-vibration system
Spring and buffer elements reduce the amount of engine vibration transmitted to the handle area. This supports more comfortable professional use, although it does not replace correct technique, task rotation and appropriate work planning.
Service-friendly air-filter system
The engine shroud can be opened without tools, providing straightforward access to the air filter for inspection and cleaning.
The carburettor compensator helps maintain engine performance, fuel use and exhaust quality as the filter gradually collects dirt. The filter must still be maintained according to the operating manual.
Tool-free fuel and oil caps
The fuel and chain-oil tanks use bayonet-style caps that can be opened and closed without a separate tool.
- Fuel-tank capacity: approximately 200 ml
- Chain-oil capacity: approximately 150 ml
Fuel and chain lubricant are separate. The engine requires STIHL MotoMix or a correct 50:1 fuel mixture, while the guide bar and chain require suitable chainsaw lubricant.

Masseys recommendation
The MS 151 TC-E should be chosen primarily for its exceptionally low powerhead weight. It is especially useful for detailed crown work and pruning where the arborist values manoeuvrability more than maximum cutting output.
Choose the 10-inch configuration where minimum cutting-attachment weight and precise positioning are priorities. Choose the 12-inch configuration where additional reach is useful and the small increase in cutting-attachment weight is acceptable.
The MS 194 T is likely to be more suitable for heavier crown work and medium removals. Arborists who prefer cordless operation should compare the MSA 161 T, MSA 190 T and MSA 220 T.

Professional safety and competence
Top-handle chainsaws are specialist arboricultural tools capable of causing serious or fatal injury. The MS 151 TC-E should only be supplied to and operated by appropriately trained and competent arborists.
Aerial tree work must be properly planned, risk assessed and supported by suitable access, work-positioning, rescue and emergency arrangements. Follow the STIHL operating manual, applicable workplace requirements and recognised arboricultural guidance.
The compact top-handle design must not be treated as making one-handed or casual use acceptable. Use a suitable rear-handle chainsaw for normal ground-based cutting.
