STIHL MSA 300 professional cordless chainsaw
The STIHL MSA 300 is STIHL’s highest-output professional cordless chainsaw, designed for demanding forestry, landscaping, estate and ground-based tree-maintenance work.
It delivers 2.50kW of mechanical power and can draw up to 3.0kW of full electrical power from the required STIHL AP 500 S battery. STIHL positions its cutting performance as comparable with the professional MS 261 C-M petrol chainsaw.
The chainsaw is supplied with a 35cm / 14-inch STIHL Light 04 guide bar and a narrow-kerf .325-inch Rapid Super Pro full-chisel saw chain. Three selectable operating modes allow the chain speed and torque characteristics to be matched to felling, delimbing or battery-efficient cutting.
The MSA 300 is part of the STIHL ALLPRO/AP professional cordless system.
The MSA 300 must be used with a STIHL AP 500 S battery. Other AP batteries should not be selected as lower-performance alternatives for this chainsaw.

Who should choose the STIHL MSA 300?
The MSA 300 is designed for experienced professional users who need high cordless cutting performance for regular and demanding work.
Typical applications include:
- Felling suitable small and medium-sized trees
- Delimbing felled timber
- Cross-cutting timber to length
- Forestry and young-stand maintenance
- Professional landscaping and estate management
- Processing firewood and timber
- Ground-based professional tree work
- Work in noise-sensitive or emission-restricted locations
The MSA 300 is a rear-handled chainsaw intended for two-handed ground-based operation. It is not a top-handle climbing saw and must not be used one-handed.
It is also unlikely to be the most economical choice for occasional domestic firewood or garden work. For less intensive professional use, compare the STIHL MSA 220 C-B.
Masseys recommendation
Choose the MSA 300 when maximum STIHL cordless chainsaw performance is genuinely required and you are prepared to invest in the mandatory AP 500 S battery platform.
The MSA 220 is usually the more practical all-round professional option for property maintenance, ordinary firewood and less demanding tree work. The MSA 300 becomes worthwhile when higher chain speed, stronger cutting performance and MS 261-class capability are required regularly.
For operators comparing battery and petrol machinery directly, the STIHL MS 261 C-M is the closest petrol reference point in STIHL’s current range.
Understanding the 2.50kW and 3.0kW power figures
Two different power figures are used for the MSA 300, and they describe different measurements.
- 2.50kW mechanical power is STIHL’s comparative output figure for comparing the chainsaw with petrol machinery.
- 3.0kW full electrical power is the maximum electrical power delivered by the AP 500 S battery to the machine.
The two figures should not be used interchangeably. For technical tables and direct chainsaw-to-chainsaw comparisons, use the 2.50kW mechanical figure.
Three selectable operating modes
The MSA 300 has three operating modes, selected using the control button and displayed on the LED notification panel.
Eco mode – 20m/s
Eco mode reduces chain speed and power demand to extend battery working time. It is useful for lighter cutting where maximum output is unnecessary.
Felling mode – 24m/s
Felling mode uses high torque with a moderated chain speed to support smooth and controlled cutting through appropriate standing timber.
Delimbing mode – 30m/s
Delimbing mode provides the highest chain speed for fast, precise cuts during professional branch removal and timber processing.
The selected mode has a significant effect on battery runtime. STIHL quotes approximately 20 to 44 minutes with an AP 500 S, depending on the mode and operating conditions.
STIHL AP 500 S battery requirement
The MSA 300 must be operated with the STIHL AP 500 S battery.
The AP 500 S uses power-laminate cell technology designed to deliver the high electrical output required by the MSA 300. It also has integrated Bluetooth connectivity for STIHL connected battery management.
Smaller AP batteries should not be presented as alternative lower-power batteries for this machine.
STIHL lists a working time of approximately 20 to 44 minutes per fully charged AP 500 S battery. Actual runtime varies according to:
- Selected operating mode
- Timber diameter and density
- Whether the wood is green, dry or seasoned
- Chain sharpness and lubrication
- Operator technique
- Ambient and battery temperature
- Frequency of starting, stopping and repositioning
A second AP 500 S may be required for sustained professional work where one battery will be charging while another is in use.
Charging the AP 500 S battery
The AP 500 S is compatible with STIHL AP chargers, but a rapid charger is the most practical choice for daily professional use.
The current STIHL high-speed option is the AL 501. Compare the available STIHL battery chargers before ordering.
If the Masseys product kit includes an older AL 500 charger rather than the current AL 501, the exact charger model should be stated in the product-option name and included-items section.
35cm Light 04 guide bar and RS Pro chain
The current UK tool-only product is supplied with a 35cm / 14-inch STIHL Light 04 guide bar and a .325-inch Rapid Super Pro saw chain with a 1.3mm drive-link gauge.
RS Pro is a professional full-chisel chain designed for high cutting performance in felling, delimbing and timber processing.
The narrow-kerf Pro cutting system improves cutting efficiency compared with earlier .325-inch chains of the same gauge.
A compatible 40cm / 16-inch cutting attachment is available separately as STIHL Cut Kit 10. The page should not describe the 16-inch bar as a supplied variation unless that configuration is genuinely sold and selected separately.
Browse our range of chainsaw chains or contact Masseys to confirm the correct RS Pro replacement chain.
STIHL Quick Chain Tensioning
The MSA 300 uses STIHL Quick Chain Tensioning, allowing the chain to be adjusted without a separate combination spanner.
After loosening the sprocket-cover knob, turn the adjustment wheel to alter the chain tension. Tightening the cover then secures the guide bar.
Chain tension must still be checked before use and periodically during longer cutting sessions. A new chain may require more frequent adjustment during its first period of operation.
LED notification cockpit
The large LED display communicates important operating information, including the selected power mode and chain-brake status.
This allows the operator to confirm the machine’s current setting before starting a cut and helps identify conditions requiring attention.
Constant Power and derating protection
STIHL Constant Power electronics help maintain consistent cutting performance as battery charge decreases.
The electronic derating system monitors operating temperature and remaining battery capacity. If the electronics approach an unsafe temperature or the battery becomes nearly depleted, output is reduced rather than allowing the machine to stop abruptly during an active cut.
Cooling-air fleece filter
A reusable fleece filter removes sawdust, fine dust and debris from the cooling airflow before it reaches the power electronics and motor components.
The filter should be inspected and cleaned regularly. STIHL recommends monthly cleaning during heavy use.
The filter can be removed and cleaned with a suitable STIHL cleaning product such as Varioclean before being reused.
Adjustable chain-oil pump
The MSA 300 has an adjustable oil pump, allowing lubricant delivery to be matched more closely to the cutting attachment and operating conditions.
A transparent oil tank makes it easy to monitor the remaining chain-oil level.
Chain oil is required and is not included with either the tool-only chainsaw or battery kit unless explicitly stated.
Purchase suitable STIHL chainsaw chain oil before using the machine.
Anti-vibration system and professional handling
STIHL’s anti-vibration system reduces the amount of motor and cutting vibration transmitted to the handles.
The compact rear-handle layout and balanced battery position are designed to support controlled two-handed operation across felling, delimbing and cross-cutting positions.
The system reduces vibration exposure but does not remove it completely. Operators should follow workplace vibration guidance and take appropriate breaks.
Smart Connector 2 A ready
The MSA 300 has a dedicated mounting position for the STIHL Smart Connector 2 A.
Once installed, the connector can transfer machine-use information into the STIHL connected App or connected Portal, helping professional users monitor equipment activity and organise fleet maintenance.
The Smart Connector is not included unless explicitly stated.
IPX4 splashwater protection
The MSA 300 is IPX4 rated, providing protection against splashing water from different directions.
This supports professional use in changing weather conditions, but it does not make the chainsaw or battery waterproof. Follow STIHL’s operating, cleaning and storage guidance.
