STIHL MSA 220 C-B professional cordless chainsaw

The STIHL MSA 220 C-B is a powerful professional cordless chainsaw designed for felling suitable small trees, delimbing, cutting timber to length, firewood preparation and building with wood.

Its 1.7kW EC motor provides strong, consistent cutting performance without fuel mixing, petrol exhaust fumes or pull-starting. The chainsaw is supplied with a 35cm / 14-inch STIHL Light 04 guide bar and a high-performance 3/8-inch P PS3 Pro saw chain.

The MSA 220 sits above the lighter MSA 200 and below the higher-output MSA 300 in STIHL’s professional cordless chainsaw range. It is a strong all-round choice for contractors, landscapers, estates, property-maintenance teams and experienced private users who need more cutting performance than the MSA 200 but do not require the size, power or battery demand of the MSA 300.

The machine forms part of the STIHL ALLPRO/AP professional cordless system, allowing compatible batteries and chargers to be used across a wide range of professional STIHL tools.

This is a tool-only chainsaw. A compatible battery, charger and chainsaw chain oil are not included.

Who is the STIHL MSA 220 suitable for?

The MSA 220 C-B is intended for demanding private and professional users who need a powerful rear-handled cordless chainsaw for regular work.

Typical applications include:

  • Delimbing felled or fallen timber
  • Cross-cutting appropriate logs and branches
  • Preparing regular quantities of firewood
  • Felling appropriately sized small trees
  • Cutting construction and landscaping timber
  • Estate and property maintenance
  • Professional landscaping and grounds maintenance
  • Work in residential and noise-sensitive areas

STIHL lists the MSA 220 for suitable small-tree work up to approximately 25cm in diameter. This is not a universal safe felling limit. Tree condition, species, lean, surroundings, operator training and escape routes must all be considered before felling work begins.

The MSA 220 is not STIHL’s highest-output cordless chainsaw. Customers requiring maximum cordless performance for more demanding forestry and large-timber work should consider the STIHL MSA 300.

Masseys recommendation

Choose the MSA 220 when you need more cutting performance than the MSA 200 but want a more manageable and less battery-intensive tool than the MSA 300.

The MSA 220 is particularly well suited to professional maintenance and estate work where the chainsaw must handle regular timber cutting but low noise, immediate starting and reduced petrol-engine maintenance are important.

For most users, the STIHL AP 300 S battery provides the best balance of working time, weight and purchase cost. STIHL recommends the AP 300 S and lists approximately 37 minutes of working time under test conditions.

The larger STIHL AP 500 S battery can provide a longer working time of approximately 44 minutes, but it adds weight and cost.

1.7kW professional cordless performance

The MSA 220 produces 1.7kW of mechanical power through an efficient brushless STIHL EC motor.

STIHL Constant Power electronics help the chainsaw maintain consistent performance as the battery charge falls. The cutting output does not gradually fade in the same way as some basic battery-powered tools.

STIHL describes the MSA 220 as having similar output to the petrol MS 201, making it a capable professional all-round chainsaw for appropriate ground-based work.

The EC motor removes several petrol-engine maintenance requirements because there is no carburettor, spark plug, fuel filter or fuel mixture to service. The cutting attachment and chain-oil system still require regular inspection and maintenance.

35cm Light 04 guide bar and PS3 Pro saw chain

The MSA 220 is supplied with a 35cm / 14-inch STIHL Light 04 guide bar and a 3/8-inch P Picco Super 3 Pro saw chain.

The PS3 Pro chain provides approximately 20% greater cutting performance than the standard 3/8-inch P PS chain. STIHL also states that it can improve energy efficiency and increase the number of cuts per battery charge by approximately 10%.

The 14-inch cutting attachment gives the MSA 220 a useful balance between cutting capacity, control and manoeuvrability for professional maintenance, firewood and small-tree work.

The chain uses a 3/8-inch P pitch and 1.3mm gauge. Always confirm the complete chain specification against the fitted guide bar before ordering a replacement.

STIHL Quick Chain Tensioning

The MSA 220 C-B uses STIHL Quick Chain Tensioning, allowing the saw chain to be adjusted without a separate combination spanner.

After loosening the large sprocket-cover knob, turn the adjustment wheel to alter the chain tension. Tightening the sprocket-cover knob then secures the guide bar.

Tool-free adjustment makes routine tensioning quicker, but the chain must still be inspected before every use and periodically during longer cutting sessions.

A new chain may stretch during its first period of use and can require more frequent adjustment.

Variable-speed control

The trigger allows the chain speed to be controlled continuously according to the task.

A lower speed can help when positioning the chain or beginning a precise cut. Full trigger input provides maximum cutting performance when working through appropriate timber.

The soft-grip rear handle and ergonomic front handle are designed for secure two-handed operation across different cutting positions.

Metal bumper spikes

Sturdy metal bumper spikes help brace the chainsaw against the timber.

Once correctly engaged, the spikes can act as a stable pivot point while the operator guides the bar through an appropriate cross-cut.

Allow the chain to reach operating speed before entering the wood and avoid forcing the cutting attachment through the timber.

Battery choice and working time

The MSA 220 uses STIHL professional ALLPRO/AP batteries. Working time varies according to the battery, timber, chain condition, cutting technique and ambient temperature.

Battery Approximate working time Recommendation
STIHL AP 300 S Up to approximately 37 minutes STIHL’s recommended battery and the best balance for most users
STIHL AP 500 S Up to approximately 44 minutes Longer working time with additional battery weight and cost

These are controlled test figures rather than guaranteed job times. Actual working time depends on:

  • Timber diameter and density
  • Whether the timber is green, dry or seasoned
  • Chain sharpness and lubrication
  • Operator technique
  • Battery condition and temperature
  • Ambient temperature
  • The number of starts, stops and repositioning periods

A compatible charger is also required. Compare the available STIHL battery chargers, including the AL 301 and AL 501, before ordering.

Transparent chain-oil tank

The translucent chain-oil tank allows the remaining lubricant level to be checked without opening the cap.

A bayonet-style tool-free cap provides straightforward access when the tank needs refilling.

The MSA 220 automatically supplies lubricant to the guide bar and moving saw chain during use. A suitable chainsaw chain oil must be added before the machine is operated.

Chain oil is not included with this tool-only chainsaw.

Purchase suitable STIHL chainsaw chain oil separately from Masseys.

Low-noise cordless operation

The brushless EC motor operates more quietly than a comparable petrol engine and produces no exhaust emissions at the point of use.

This makes the MSA 220 useful for professional maintenance in residential areas, parks, educational sites, hospitality grounds and other locations where petrol-engine noise or fumes would be disruptive.

The moving chain and cutting action still produce significant noise. Suitable hearing protection remains important.

IPX4 splashwater protection

The MSA 220 is IPX4 rated, providing protection against water splashes from different directions.

This supports professional use in changing weather, but it does not make the chainsaw waterproof. The machine, battery and charger must always be used, cleaned and stored according to the STIHL instructions.

Choose the MSA 160 when low weight and lighter cutting are the priorities.

Choose the MSA 200 for a balanced professional saw for pruning, firewood and general property work.

Choose the MSA 220 when you need more torque, a more aggressive PS3 Pro chain and stronger cutting performance without moving to the MSA 300.

Choose the MSA 300 when maximum output is required and the additional weight, battery demand and purchase cost are justified.

Should you choose cordless or petrol?

The MSA 220 is a strong alternative to a petrol chainsaw for users who value:

  • Immediate starting
  • No fuel mixing
  • No petrol exhaust emissions during use
  • Lower motor-maintenance requirements
  • Lower operating noise
  • Compatibility with other professional STIHL battery tools
  • Work in residential and noise-sensitive environments

A petrol chainsaw may still be more suitable where:

  • Continuous cutting is required without charging breaks
