What is the MSA 220.1 TC-O designed for?

The MSA 220.1 TC-O is intended for specialist professional tree-care work in the canopy.

Suitable applications include:

  • Crown correction
  • Removing dead or damaged branches
  • Sectioning branches during dismantling work
  • Removing suitable pieces of trunk
  • Professional pruning and crown maintenance
  • Working in noise-sensitive environments

It is not a general-purpose domestic saw and should not be promoted for routine ground-based firewood cutting or conventional felling.

For professional ground-based cutting, compare the rear-handle STIHL MSA 220 C-B cordless chainsaw.

10% more torque than the previous model

The MSA 220.1 TC-O produces 10% more torque than the previous MSA 220 T and TC-O generation.

The additional torque helps the cutting attachment maintain performance when working through denser timber or completing more demanding professional cuts.

This improvement is particularly valuable during crown reduction and dismantling work, where the saw may encounter changing wood diameters and cutting positions.

Power Boost technology

Power Boost allows compatible STIHL batteries and tools to communicate electronically so the chainsaw can draw the highest suitable battery output for the cutting task.

STIHL specifies:

  • Standard electrical output of approximately 1.25 kW
  • Peak battery output of up to approximately 1.8 kW through Power Boost
  • Comparative mechanical power rating of 1.70 kW

The intelligent electronics can temporarily regulate output during exceptionally intensive use to protect the battery and power unit.

Constant Power performance

STIHL Constant Power electronics help maintain consistent cutting performance as the battery charge decreases.

The chainsaw does not simply become progressively slower as the battery runs down. The electronic control system maintains output until the remaining battery capacity or operating temperature requires the power to be regulated.

Battery compatibility and working times

The MSA 220.1 TC-O can deliver full performance with the following professional STIHL batteries:

  • STIHL AP 200 S
  • STIHL AP 300 S
  • STIHL AP 500 S

AP 200 S: lowest operating weight

The AP 200 S provides the lightest compatible battery configuration. It is useful where reducing total weight is more important than achieving maximum working time.

This can be particularly beneficial during prolonged climbing work or tasks involving repeated repositioning of the saw.

AP 300 S: recommended balance

STIHL recommends the AP 300 S because its weight helps counterbalance the 30 cm guide bar.

With a fully charged AP 300 S, STIHL states that the MSA 220.1 TC-O can provide up to approximately 24 minutes of working time.

View the STIHL AP 300 S professional battery.

AP 500 S: longest working time

The AP 500 S increases the published working time to up to approximately 34 minutes.

It is the appropriate option where reducing the frequency of battery changes is more important than maintaining the lightest or best-balanced configuration.

View the STIHL AP 500 S battery.

Actual working time will vary according to timber diameter, wood density, chain condition, cutting technique, battery temperature and operating conditions.

30 cm Light P04 guide bar

The MSA 220.1 TC-O is supplied with a 30 cm / 12″ STIHL Light P04 guide bar.

The lightweight bar reduces mass at the front of the saw, helping improve balance and manoeuvrability during professional canopy work.

The compact cutting attachment provides useful capacity for crown work and sectional dismantling without making the saw unnecessarily long or difficult to position between branches.

3/8″ P Picco Super 3 chain

The standard cutting system uses a 3/8″ P Picco Super 3 full-chisel chain with a 1.3 mm drive-link gauge.

The PS3 chain is designed to provide:

  • High cutting performance
  • Clean and precise cuts
  • Excellent biting characteristics
  • Efficient use of the available battery power

Correct sharpening, tension and lubrication are essential for maintaining performance.

Contact Masseys before ordering from our replacement chainsaw chain range so that we can confirm the correct chain for the fitted guide bar.

Oil sensor with LED warning

The TC-O version includes an electronic oil-supply sensor.

The sensor monitors whether sufficient chain oil is reaching the cutting attachment. If the LED warning turns red, inadequate oil is reaching the guide bar and chain.

The machine should be stopped and the following checked:

  • Chain-oil level
  • Oil-tank cap
  • Oil-delivery opening
  • Guide-bar oil channels
  • Chain and guide-bar condition

The oil warning helps prevent avoidable damage, but it does not replace manual checks before starting work.

Variable-displacement oil pump

The adjustable oil pump allows the chain-oil delivery rate to be matched more closely to the cutting conditions.

The economy setting can reduce chain-oil consumption by up to 50% during less demanding work.

Additional oil delivery can be selected when working with very dry timber or where the cutting attachment requires increased lubrication.

Always fill the tank with suitable STIHL chainsaw chain oil before the first use.

Electronic controls and LED display

The saw is activated using an electronic unlock button and trigger rather than a pull-start mechanism.

The large LED display provides information about important operating conditions, including:

  • Chainsaw activation status
  • Chain-brake position
  • Oil-supply warning
  • Relevant operating or fault information

The display is positioned where it can be checked quickly during professional work.

Performance electronics with derating protection

The electronic derating system protects the saw from excessive temperature and very low remaining battery capacity.

Instead of switching off without warning, the system can reduce power so that a cut already in progress can be completed safely.

This helps protect the battery and motor while giving the operator clear warning that the machine requires cooling or a charged battery.

Side-mounted chain tensioning

The chain is adjusted through a tensioning screw positioned at the side of the sprocket cover.

This provides protected access to the adjustment mechanism without placing the tool directly beside the sharp chain teeth.

Chain tension should be checked:

  • Before starting work
  • After installing a new chain
  • During longer working sessions
  • Whenever the chain no longer sits correctly against the guide bar

Remove the battery and wear suitable gloves before handling or adjusting the chain.

Tool-free oil-tank cap

The oil tank uses a bayonet-style cap that can be opened and closed without a separate tool.

Ensure that the cap is correctly aligned and fully locked after filling to prevent leakage during climbing or transport.

Fleece cooling-air filter

The reusable fleece filter removes sawdust, dust and debris from the cooling airflow before it reaches the motor and electronic components.

Keeping the filter clean supports consistent cooling and helps extend the working life of the machine.

STIHL recommends regular cleaning, with more frequent attention during intensive or dusty work.

Removable battery compartment

The battery compartment can be removed to improve access when cleaning the saw.

This makes it easier to remove accumulated sawdust and debris from areas around the battery housing and cooling system.

Always remove the battery before cleaning or maintaining the chainsaw.

Captive sprocket-cover nut

The sprocket-cover nut remains attached to the cover when loosened.

This reduces the chance of dropping or losing it during chain changes or maintenance, particularly when work is being carried out away from the ground.

Fold-out suspension hook

The integrated hook provides an attachment point for connecting the saw to a suitable chainsaw strop.

It can be used to lift, lower or secure the machine during appropriately managed professional tree work.

The hook folds against the housing when it is not required, reducing interference during storage and handling.

Two-handed operation

The MSA 220.1 TC-O must not be treated as a one-handed chainsaw.

The ergonomic top handle and front grip are designed to be held securely with both hands whenever the machine is running.

One-handed operation significantly increases the risk of losing control and should not be promoted as a normal operating method.

IPX4 splashwater protection

The saw is IPX4 rated for protection against splashwater from different directions.

This allows professional use in changeable outdoor conditions, but it does not mean that the machine can be submerged, pressure washed or stored while wet.

Follow the operating instructions for cleaning, drying and storage.
