Description

The STIHL MSA 190 T cordless chainsaw is a specialist professional top-handle saw developed for trained or certified arborists carrying out aerial tree maintenance. Its compact design, 30 cm cutting attachment and carefully balanced battery position make it suitable for pruning, crown maintenance and deadwood removal while working within the canopy.

The 1.20 kW brushless motor provides a maximum chain speed of 20 m/s and delivers cutting performance comparable with the petrol STIHL MS 194 T. The MSA 190 T is quieter during operation, requires no petrol mixture and produces no direct exhaust emissions at the point of use.

Important professional-use restriction: This is a top-handle arborist chainsaw for appropriately trained or certified users carrying out aerial tree work. It must not be used as a general-purpose ground-work chainsaw. It is not intended for gardeners, untrained domestic users or casual landscaping work.

Professional-use restriction

The MSA 190 T is designed for arboricultural work in the crown of a standing tree. It is not a compact substitute for a conventional rear-handle chainsaw and must not be used for ordinary ground-based cutting.

Purchase and use are restricted to appropriately trained or certified arborists. The operator must have the competence required for top-handle chainsaw use, aerial tree work, climbing and work positioning, emergency procedures and the management of falling branches and timber.

The saw should not be promoted for ladder work. Aerial use must form part of a properly planned arboricultural operation using appropriate access, climbing or work-positioning systems and a suitable risk assessment.

What is the MSA 190 T designed to do?

The compact 30 cm cutting attachment and top-handle configuration make the MSA 190 T suitable for controlled tree-maintenance tasks within the canopy.

Typical professional applications include:

  • Removing deadwood from established trees
  • Crown maintenance and selective branch removal
  • Reducing suitable small and medium branches
  • Dismantling manageable sections during planned aerial tree work
  • Working in noise-sensitive locations where a cordless saw is advantageous
  • Professional arboricultural maintenance where petrol exhaust emissions are undesirable

It is not intended for general firewood preparation, ground-based logging, domestic garden use or untrained tree cutting. For those tasks, choose an appropriate rear-handle chainsaw from our cordless chainsaw range.

1.20 kW professional cutting performance

The electronically controlled brushless motor produces 1.20 kW and drives the chain at up to 20 m/s. This gives the MSA 190 T performance comparable with the petrol MS 194 T while avoiding fuel mixing, pull starting and direct exhaust emissions during operation.

The variable-speed trigger allows the arborist to control chain speed according to the cut. The soft-grip handle and compact control layout support controlled handling in different working positions.

30 cm Light 01 guide bar and PS3 Pro chain

The MSA 190 T is supplied with a 30 cm / 12-inch STIHL Light 01 guide bar and a 3/8-inch P PS3 Pro saw chain.

Guide-bar length 30 cm / 12 inches
Chain pitch 3/8-inch P
Chain type STIHL PS3 Pro
Chain gauge 1.1 mm
Drive links 44

The narrow cutting attachment supports efficient battery use and precise pruning. Replacement chains must match the bar length, pitch, gauge and drive-link count exactly.

AP 200 S battery for optimum balance

The STIHL AP 200 S battery is recommended for the best balance and power-to-weight ratio. Its compact size helps retain the handling characteristics expected from a professional top-handle saw.

The AP 300 S and AP 500 S provide longer working times but add weight and alter the balance of the complete machine. Battery choice should therefore consider handling and fatigue as well as maximum runtime.

STIHL battery Approximate working time Best suited to
AP 200 S – recommended Up to 48 minutes Optimum balance and power-to-weight ratio
AP 300 S Up to 75 minutes Longer work periods where the additional battery weight is acceptable
AP 500 S Up to 90 minutes Maximum working time, with the greatest effect on saw weight and balance

These are manufacturer estimates. Actual working time varies according to timber, chain condition, cutting technique, temperature and battery condition.

The battery and charger are not included. Browse our STIHL AP professional cordless range and STIHL battery chargers.

Power Boost and Constant Power

Power Boost allows the saw and compatible battery to communicate so that the available battery output can be used when cutting conditions require it.

Constant Power helps maintain consistent cutting performance as the battery charge decreases. The operator therefore receives more predictable output throughout the working period rather than a gradual reduction in chain performance.

STIHL Quick Chain Tensioning

The Quick Chain Tensioning system allows the chain to be adjusted without a separate combination spanner. The operator releases the sprocket-cover control, adjusts the tension using the side wheel and secures the cover again.

Remove the battery before inspecting or adjusting the cutting attachment, and follow the procedure in the STIHL operating manual.

Transparent 200 ml oil tank

The transparent chain-oil tank allows the lubricant level to be checked visually. Its tool-free cap provides straightforward access when refilling.

The tank holds up to approximately 200 ml. Suitable chainsaw lubricant is essential for cooling and lubricating the bar and chain.

Chain oil is not included and must be added before the saw is operated.

Fold-out suspension hook and saw attachment options

A fold-out hook allows the chainsaw to be suspended securely while moving within the canopy when used as part of an appropriate professional system.

Compatible STIHL eyelet and strop-adapter accessories are available for approved arboricultural attachment arrangements. The selected connection method must follow STIHL instructions and the arborist’s established working procedures.

Browse suitable climbing and arborist accessories.

Compact professional design

The powerhead weighs approximately 2.7 kg without the battery, guide bar or saw chain. The complete operating weight depends on the battery and cutting attachment fitted.

The compact top-handle design is intended to support controlled manoeuvring during professional canopy work. It should not be interpreted as making the saw suitable for inexperienced or one-handed casual use.

IPX4 protection

The MSA 190 T has an IPX4 rating and is designed with splashwater protection. This does not remove the need to follow the operating manual, inspect the machine and battery, and assess the working conditions before use.

Masseys recommendation

The MSA 190 T is best viewed as the professional middle ground between STIHL’s lighter pruning-focused top-handle saws and the higher-performance MSA 220 T range.

Its 1.20 kW output and 20 m/s chain speed provide useful professional performance without sacrificing the balance needed for aerial tree maintenance. We recommend pairing it with the AP 200 S where handling and fatigue are priorities.

The AP 300 S and AP 500 S can extend working time, but the additional battery weight should be considered carefully. Arborists requiring maximum cutting output should compare the MSA 220 T, while those carrying out lighter pruning may prefer the MSA 161 T.

Professional safety and competence

Top-handle chainsaws are specialist arboricultural tools capable of causing serious or fatal injury. The MSA 190 T should only be supplied to and used by appropriately trained or certified arborists.

The operator is responsible for ensuring that the work is properly planned and that suitable access, climbing, work-positioning, lowering, rescue and emergency arrangements are in place.

Use suitable professional arborist personal protective equipment and follow the STIHL operating manual, current workplace requirements, site-specific risk assessment and industry guidance.

Do not use the MSA 190 T as a conventional ground saw, for casual domestic cutting or as a shortcut to avoid using an appropriate rear-handle chainsaw.

Frequently asked questions

Who can buy the STIHL MSA 190 T?

STIHL restricts the product to trained or certified arborists. Masseys may request evidence of appropriate professional competence or certification before fulfilling the order.

Can the MSA 190 T be used for ground work?

No. The STIHL operating manual states that the MSA 190 T is intended for tree surgery and cutting in the crown of a standing tree and must not be used for ground work. Use a suitable rear-handle chainsaw for ground-based cutting.

Is the MSA 190 T suitable for gardeners?

No. It is a specialist professional top-handle arborist chainsaw, not a domestic garden saw. Untrained users should not purchase or operate it.

Does the MSA 190 T include a battery and charger?

No. It is supplied as a tool-only product. A compatible AP battery and charger must be purchased separately.
