STIHL GTA 30 Cordless Garden Pruner Set

£289.00

The STIHL GTA 30 cordless garden pruner set is a compact, two-handed battery pruning saw for cutting branches, shrubs, woody garden waste and small timber around larger domestic gardens.

It uses two AS 2 batteries simultaneously and combines a 15cm guide bar with STIHL’s low-vibration ¼-inch PM3 saw chain. Under STIHL test conditions, the supplied battery pair can deliver up to approximately 180 cuts through 5cm branches.

  • Includes 2 × STIHL AS 2 batteries
  • Includes STIHL AL 5-2 dual high-speed charger
  • Includes hard storage case
  • Includes 50ml STIHL Multioil Bio
  • 15cm / 6-inch guide bar
  • RightTight tool-free chain tensioning
  • Approximately 1.9kg with batteries fitted

Both batteries must be fitted for the GTA 30 to operate. Hold the pruner with two hands and lubricate the chain regularly during use.

Is the STIHL GTA 30 right for you?

The STIHL GTA 30 Cordless Garden Pruner is designed for householders who regularly prune trees and shrubs, reduce woody garden waste or complete small timber-cutting jobs around a larger domestic garden.

It sits between the compact STIHL GTA 26 garden pruner and the professional STIHL GTA 40 cordless pruner.

Compared with the GTA 26, the GTA 30 provides a longer 15cm guide bar, greater cutting performance and substantially more work from a charged battery set. It remains compact enough for controlled two-handed use around branches, shrubs, garden waste and small timber.

The GTA 30 forms part of the STIHL AS System, but differs from most AS tools because it requires two AS 2 batteries fitted simultaneously. It cannot operate with only one battery.

  • Best suited to: regular domestic pruning, larger gardens, shrubs, woody waste and small DIY timber jobs
  • Battery system: STIHL AS System
  • Batteries required: 2 × STIHL AS 2, used together
  • Guide bar: 15cm / 6-inch STIHL Light 01
  • Machine weight: approximately 1.9kg with both batteries fitted
  • Published workload: up to approximately 180 cuts under STIHL test conditions
  • Manufacturer number: GA050116917

Masseys recommendation: Choose the GTA 30 when you like the compact shape of the GTA 26 but need a longer cutting attachment and more capacity for regular pruning jobs. Choose the GTA 40 for professional horticulture, landscaping, tree care or frequent construction work.

What is included with the STIHL GTA 30 set?

  • 1 × STIHL GTA 30 cordless garden pruner
  • 2 × STIHL AS 2 10.8V lithium-ion batteries
  • 1 × STIHL AL 5-2 dual high-speed charger
  • 1 × 15cm / 6-inch STIHL Light 01 guide bar
  • 1 × ¼-inch P Picco Micro 3 saw chain
  • 1 × hard storage and transport case
  • 1 × 50ml bottle of STIHL Multioil Bio
  • Operating and safety documentation

The hard case has dedicated storage for the machine, supplied batteries and charger. It also has capacity for an additional pair of AS 2 batteries.

This is a complete set. Both batteries, the charger, cutting attachment and initial chain lubricant are included.

Key features of the STIHL GTA 30

Twin AS 2 battery system

The GTA 30 uses two STIHL AS 2 batteries at the same time. Both batteries are fitted to the rear of the handle and discharged in parallel while the machine is operating.

The pruner will not start with only one battery installed.

The included batteries can still be removed and used individually in compatible single-battery tools from the STIHL AS cordless range.

Customers who want a second charged pair available can purchase additional STIHL AS 2 batteries separately.

AL 5-2 dual high-speed charger

The included STIHL AL 5-2 dual high-speed charger charges two AS 2 batteries simultaneously.

STIHL gives approximate charging times of:

  • 30 minutes to approximately 80% charge
  • 50 minutes to approximately 100% charge

Because both GTA 30 batteries can charge together, the machine does not require two separate chargers.

15cm STIHL Light 01 guide bar

The GTA 30 uses a 15cm / 6-inch STIHL Light 01 guide bar. This gives it a longer cutting attachment than the GTA 26 while retaining a compact shape for manoeuvring between shrubs and branches.

The 15cm measurement describes the guide-bar length. It should not be interpreted as a guaranteed maximum branch diameter.

Whether a cut is appropriate depends on:

  • Wood species and density
  • Whether the timber is green, dry, dead or decayed
  • The position and stability of the branch
  • Saw-chain condition and lubrication
  • The operator’s ability to support the tool correctly with two hands
  • Whether the material can be positioned and supported safely

¼-inch P Picco Micro 3 chain

The 15cm guide bar is fitted with a STIHL ¼-inch P Picco Micro 3 saw chain with a 1.1mm gauge and 38 drive links.

The narrow PM3 chain is designed to deliver smooth cutting with relatively low vibration. Correct tension, lubrication and sharpening are essential for maintaining its cutting performance.

RightTight tool-free chain tensioning

The STIHL RightTight system allows the chain to be tensioned without a separate spanner or screwdriver.

A fold-out handle on the sprocket cover opens the mechanism. Closing and securing the cover activates the spring-loaded system and applies the intended chain tension.

Chain tension should still be checked before use and at appropriate intervals while working.

Constant Power electronics

STIHL Constant Power electronics help maintain consistent cutting performance as the batteries discharge.

This means the machine is designed to continue cutting at a stable output rather than gradually becoming noticeably weaker as the remaining charge falls.

Up to approximately 180 cuts

STIHL publishes a maximum result of up to approximately 180 cuts from a fully charged pair of AS 2 batteries under its test conditions.

This is a comparative workload figure rather than a guaranteed number for every job. Actual performance varies according to:

  • Branch size and wood density
  • Green, dry or dead timber
  • Chain sharpness and lubrication
  • Cutting technique
  • Battery condition and temperature
  • Frequency of stopping and restarting

Manual chain lubrication

The GTA 30 does not have an automatic chain-oil tank. Lubricant must be applied directly to the saw chain at regular intervals.

A 50ml bottle of STIHL Multioil Bio is included with the set. Check the chain frequently and lubricate it according to the STIHL operating instructions.

Replacement chains, guide bars, lubricants and maintenance equipment can be found within our chainsaw accessories and protective equipment range.

Flexible protective hood

A flexible protective hood covers the upper section of the cutting attachment. It moves upwards as the chain enters the material, helping reduce the likelihood of accidental contact with the upper chain.

The asymmetrical hood can be moved through approximately 90 degrees where access to more of the guide-bar length is required.

The hood does not eliminate the danger presented by the moving saw chain. The GTA 30 must still be held correctly with two hands and used in accordance with the operating manual.

Designed for two-handed control

The GTA 30 has a rubberised main control handle and a separate upper grip.

During use:

  • Keep one hand on the main control handle
  • Keep the other hand on the upper grip
  • Maintain stable footing
  • Keep the cutting attachment below shoulder height
  • Allow the chain to do the cutting rather than forcing the tool

LED battery indicator

An LED display on top of the machine allows the remaining battery charge to be checked without removing the batteries.

Hard storage case

The supplied hard case protects the machine and keeps the batteries, charger, cutting attachment and lubricant together during transport and storage.

The case also contains space for an additional pair of AS 2 batteries and includes guidance for organising charged and discharged batteries.

Masseys expert verdict

The GTA 30 fills the gap between the compact GTA 26 and the professional GTA 40 effectively.

Its main advantages are the 15cm guide bar, two-battery power system, up-to-180-cut test result and included AL 5-2 dual charger. These make it better suited to regular pruning work than the GTA 26 without requiring customers to purchase a professional machine.

Its principal limitation is maintenance. Unlike the GTA 40, it does not have an automatic chain-oil tank. The chain must be lubricated manually and checked regularly.

For a householder with a larger garden, established shrubs and recurring pruning work, the GTA 30 is likely to be the strongest model in the GTA range. For occasional light work, the GTA 26 remains better value. For commercial work, choose the GTA 40.

Frequently asked questions

Does the STIHL GTA 30 include batteries and a charger?

Yes. This complete set includes two STIHL AS 2 batteries and an AL 5-2 dual high-speed charger.

Can the GTA 30 operate with one battery?

No. Both AS 2 batteries must be fitted correctly before the GTA 30 will operate.

Are the two batteries used one after the other?

No. The GTA 30 uses both AS 2 batteries simultaneously. They are discharged together while the machine is running.

How long do the batteries take to charge?

The AL 5-2 charger charges both AS 2 batteries at the same time. STIHL gives an approximate full charging time of 50 minutes.

How many cuts can the GTA 30 make?

STIHL publishes a maximum result of up to approximately 180 cuts from a fully charged battery pair under its test conditions. Actual results depend on the wood, chain condition, lubrication and operating technique.

Can the GTA 30 cut a 15cm branch?

The 15cm measurement describes the guide-bar length, not a guaranteed maximum cutting diameter. Whether a particular branch can be cut safely depends on its diameter, position, stability, wood density and the condition of the chain.

Does the GTA 30 oil the chain automatically?

No. Lubricant must be applied manually and regularly to the chain. A 50ml bottle of STIHL Multioil Bio is included.

Is the STIHL GTA 30 a mini chainsaw?

It is often described informally as a mini chainsaw because it uses a guide bar and saw chain. STIHL officially classifies it as a cordless garden pruner intended for pruning and small cutting jobs.

Is the GTA 30 better than the GTA 26?

The GTA 30 is more powerful, has a longer 15cm guide bar and provides greater cutting capacity per charged battery set. The GTA 26 remains smaller, lighter and less expensive for occasional pruning.

What is the difference between the GTA 30 and GTA 40?

The GTA 30 is intended for demanding domestic use and has manual chain lubrication. The GTA 40 is designed for professional work and includes variable chain speed, automatic chain lubrication and professional-use features.

Can the GTA 30 replace a conventional chainsaw?

It can replace a full-size chainsaw for many small pruning and garden-waste jobs. It is not intended for tree felling, large logs or sustained heavy timber cutting.

Can I use the GTA 30 on a ladder?

No. Maintain secure footing and do not operate the GTA 30 from a ladder. Use an appropriate pole pruner or professional tree-care service for elevated branches.

Safe use and maintenance

The GTA 30 has a fast-moving saw chain and can cause serious injury if used incorrectly. Read the STIHL operating manual before use.

  • Hold the machine securely with both hands
  • Wear suitable eye protection, gloves, sturdy footwear and appropriate clothing
  • Keep other people and animals away from the working area
  • Remove both batteries before adjusting, cleaning or inspecting the machine
  • Check chain tension and lubrication before starting
  • Do not cut above shoulder height
  • Do not use the machine from a ladder
  • Do not use the GTA 30 for tree felling
  • Check timber for nails, screws, wire and other foreign objects
  • Allow the chain to stop completely before putting the machine down
  • Store the pruner with both batteries removed and the cutting attachment protected

Keep the chain correctly sharpened, tensioned and lubricated. Replace damaged or excessively worn cutting components with the correct genuine parts.
