Description

The STIHL MS 182 C-BE is a powerful homeowner petrol chainsaw designed for regular firewood cutting, larger-garden maintenance and felling appropriately sized small trees.

It uses the same 35.8 cm³, 1.6 kW / 2.2 hp STIHL 2-MIX engine as the standard MS 182 but adds two important comfort features: STIHL ErgoStart and STIHL Quick Chain Tensioning.

ErgoStart reduces the effort needed to pull the starter cord, while Quick Chain Tensioning allows the chain to be adjusted without using the supplied combination tool. These features make the C-BE particularly useful for homeowners who want a petrol chainsaw that is simpler to start and maintain.

Every petrol chainsaw sold by Masseys is assembled, fuelled and test-run by our STIHL-trained team before handover, so it is correctly prepared and ready for its first job.

Who should choose the STIHL MS 182 C-BE?

The MS 182 C-BE is intended for homeowners who need more cutting performance than an entry-level occasional-use chainsaw and who place a high value on easy starting and straightforward chain adjustment.

It is particularly suitable for:

  • Regular domestic firewood preparation
  • Cross-cutting manageable logs
  • Clearing fallen branches
  • Maintaining trees around a larger garden or smallholding
  • Felling appropriately sized small trees
  • Seasonal property and estate maintenance
  • Users who find conventional pull-starting difficult
  • Customers who prefer tool-free chain adjustment

For lighter and less frequent work, compare the STIHL MS 172 petrol chainsaw.

For more demanding domestic work and larger quantities of firewood, compare the STIHL MS 212 or the comfort-equipped STIHL MS 212 C-BE.

What does C-BE mean?

The letters after a STIHL chainsaw model number identify additional equipment or comfort features.

  • C – Comfort: the model includes additional features intended to make operation or maintenance easier.
  • B – Quick Chain Tensioning: the chain can be adjusted using the side-mounted wingnut and adjustment wheel without a separate tool.
  • E – ErgoStart: a spring-assisted starter mechanism reduces the force and speed needed to pull the starter cord.

The MS 182 C-BE therefore combines the standard MS 182 engine and cutting performance with easier starting and tool-free chain adjustment.

STIHL ErgoStart

STIHL ErgoStart places an additional spring between the crankshaft and starter-rope mechanism.

Instead of requiring a fast, forceful pull, the starter cord can be drawn out more slowly and smoothly. The spring stores the energy from the pull and releases it to turn the engine.

This can be particularly useful for:

  • Users who find sharp starter-cord resistance uncomfortable
  • Customers who only use a petrol chainsaw periodically
  • Starting the saw in cold conditions
  • Reducing repeated pulling when preparing the machine for work

ErgoStart reduces starting effort, but the correct starting sequence and safe starting position must still be followed.

Manual fuel pump

The manual fuel pump allows the operator to press a primer bulb before starting. This draws fuel towards the carburettor and can reduce the number of starter-cord pulls required after the machine has been stored or the fuel tank has run dry.

Pressing the fuel pump too many times does not normally flood the carburettor because excess fuel is returned to the tank.

STIHL Quick Chain Tensioning

The C-BE model uses STIHL Quick Chain Tensioning rather than the tool-adjusted tensioning screw fitted to the standard MS 182.

To adjust the chain:

  1. Switch off the engine and allow hot components to cool.
  2. Wear suitable protective gloves.
  3. Release the chain brake.
  4. Raise the handle on the sprocket-cover wingnut and loosen it.
  5. Hold the guide-bar tip upwards.
  6. Turn the adjustment wheel until the chain sits correctly against the guide bar.
  7. Tighten the wingnut securely and fold the handle down.
  8. Check that the chain moves freely and remains seated against the underside of the bar.

Chain tension should be checked before work, after fitting a new chain and periodically during longer cutting sessions.

Choosing the 14-inch or 16-inch guide bar

The STIHL MS 182 C-BE is available with either a 14″ / 35 cm or 16″ / 40 cm guide bar.

Both versions use the same 35.8 cm³ engine and have the same power output. A longer guide bar provides additional reach but does not make the chainsaw more powerful.

14″ / 35 cm guide bar

The 14-inch version is the balanced choice for most domestic users.

Choose it when:

  • Ease of handling is the main priority
  • You mainly process ordinary domestic firewood
  • You regularly work around branches or confined areas
  • You do not require the extra reach of the 16-inch bar

16″ / 40 cm guide bar

The 16-inch version provides extra guide-bar reach for somewhat larger logs, stems and branches.

Choose it when:

  • You regularly encounter larger-diameter timber
  • The additional cutting reach will be useful
  • You are comfortable handling the longer cutting attachment

Guide-bar length alone does not determine the maximum timber that can be cut safely. Timber species, condition, operator competence, working position and cutting technique must all be considered.

35.8 cm³ STIHL 2-MIX engine

The MS 182 C-BE is powered by a 35.8 cm³ STIHL 2-MIX two-stroke engine producing 1.6 kW / 2.2 hp.

STIHL four-channel combustion technology directs the fuel-and-air mixture into the cylinder to support efficient combustion and strong cutting performance.

The engine is designed to combine useful domestic cutting output with lower fuel consumption and exhaust emissions than older conventional STIHL two-stroke engine designs of a comparable output.

3/8-inch P Picco Micro 3 cutting system

The chainsaw uses a narrow-kerf 3/8″ P Picco Micro 3 saw chain with a 1.3 mm drive-link gauge.

The narrow cutting width allows the available engine power to be used efficiently, while the semi-chisel cutter profile provides a useful combination of cutting performance, durability and controllability for domestic users.

The exact replacement chain depends on the selected guide-bar length. Confirm whether your saw has a 14-inch or 16-inch bar before ordering from our chainsaw chain range.

Metal bumper spikes

The metal bumper spikes can be placed against the timber to provide a secure pivot point during cutting.

Using the bumper spikes correctly helps the operator guide the saw through the cut rather than supporting the full cutting force only through the handles.

Anti-vibration system

Spring and buffer elements reduce the amount of engine and cutting vibration transmitted to the handles.

This can make the chainsaw more comfortable to control during appropriate firewood and property-maintenance work. It does not eliminate vibration, so correct technique and regular breaks remain important.

Combi lever with stop function

The principal starting, running and stopping functions are controlled through one lever.

After the engine is switched off, the control returns to the normal operating position. This simplifies restarting a warm engine after a short interruption.

Carburettor compensator

The carburettor compensator helps maintain engine performance, fuel consumption and exhaust quality as the air filter gradually becomes contaminated.

This allows the saw to continue working effectively for longer between filter-cleaning intervals. The air filter must still be inspected and maintained according to the operating instructions.

Fuel and chain-oil requirements

The MS 182 C-BE requires two separate fluids:

  • A 50:1 mixture of petrol and approved two-stroke engine oil for the engine
  • Dedicated chain oil for lubricating the guide bar and saw chain

For self-mixed fuel, use fresh suitable petrol with approved STIHL two-stroke engine oil at the correct ratio.

Alternatively, STIHL MotoMix can be used as a ready-mixed 50:1 fuel. Eligible domestic customers can also extend the standard warranty by purchasing five litres of MotoMix with the chainsaw, subject to STIHL’s current terms.

The guide bar and chain require separate STIHL chain oil. Two-stroke engine oil must never be placed in the chain-oil tank.

Fuel, two-stroke engine oil, chain oil and protective equipment are not included unless specifically stated in the selected offer.

What is STIHL ErgoStart?

ErgoStart is a spring-assisted starting system that reduces the force and speed needed to pull the starter cord.

Does the MS 182 C-BE have tool-free chain adjustment?

Yes. STIHL Quick Chain Tensioning uses a side-mounted wingnut and adjustment wheel, so no separate tool is required for normal chain-tension adjustment.

Should I choose the 14-inch or 16-inch model?

Choose the 14-inch model for easier handling and typical domestic firewood work. Choose the 16-inch version when additional guide-bar reach is useful. Both have the same engine and power output.

Is the 16-inch version more powerful?

No. The engine specification is identical. Only the guide-bar and matching chain length change.

What chain does it use?

It uses a 3/8″ P, 1.3 mm STIHL Picco Micro 3 chain. The correct replacement-chain length depends on the selected guide bar.

What fuel does it use?

It uses a 50:1 mixture of suitable petrol and approved two-stroke engine oil. STIHL MotoMix ready-mixed fuel can also be used.

Does it require separate chain oil?

Yes. Dedicated chain oil must be added to the chain-oil tank to lubricate the guide bar and saw chain.

Is fuel or oil included?

Fuel, two-stroke oil and chain oil are not normally included unless they are specifically listed as part of the offer.

Is the MS 182 C-BE suitable for cutting firewood?

Yes. Regular domestic firewood preparation is one of its principal intended uses.

Can it fell trees?

It can be used to fell appropriately sized small trees by a competent operator. Larger trees, difficult conditions and commercial felling work require suitable training, planning and potentially a more specialised chainsaw.

What warranty does it have?

The standard warranty is two years for domestic use and one year for professional use, subject to STIHL’s terms. Eligible domestic customers may extend the warranty to three years by purchasing five litres of STIHL MotoMix with the machine and having it registered at the point of sale.

Can Masseys service and sharpen it?

Yes. Masseys provides chainsaw servicing, repairs, replacement parts and chain sharpening through its on-site garden-machinery workshop.
