Description

The STIHL MS 182 is a 35.8 cm³ petrol chainsaw designed for homeowners who regularly process firewood, maintain larger gardens or smallholdings, clear fallen branches and fell suitable small trees.

Its STIHL 2-MIX engine produces 1.6 kW / 2.2 hp, giving it more cutting performance than STIHL’s lighter entry-level domestic saws without moving into the size, weight or price of a professional forestry chainsaw.

The MS 182 is available with either a 14″ / 35 cm or 16″ / 40 cm guide bar. Both versions use the same engine—the longer bar provides additional reach but does not increase the saw’s power.

Who should choose the STIHL MS 182?

The MS 182 is a strong choice for homeowners who need more capacity than a basic occasional-use chainsaw but do not require a professional forestry machine.

It is particularly suitable for:

  • Regular domestic firewood cutting
  • Cross-cutting manageable logs
  • Clearing fallen branches
  • Maintaining trees around a larger garden or smallholding
  • Felling suitable small trees
  • General property and estate maintenance
  • Customers who prefer a petrol saw with no battery-runtime restriction

For occasional light pruning or smaller quantities of firewood, the STIHL MS 162 may be sufficient.

The STIHL MS 172 offers a lighter intermediate option, while the more powerful STIHL MS 212 is worth considering for larger quantities of firewood and more demanding regular work.

Choosing the 14-inch or 16-inch guide bar

The MS 182 is available with two guide-bar lengths.

14″ / 35 cm guide bar

The 14-inch version is the balanced choice for most domestic users. Its shorter cutting attachment makes the saw easier to manoeuvre and keeps more of the available engine performance focused on typical firewood and property-maintenance work.

Choose the 14-inch version when:

  • Ease of handling is the main priority
  • You are cutting ordinary domestic firewood
  • You regularly work around branches and confined areas
  • You do not need the additional reach of a 16-inch bar

16″ / 40 cm guide bar

The 16-inch version provides additional reach for somewhat larger logs, stems and branches.

Choose the 16-inch version when:

  • You regularly encounter larger-diameter material
  • Additional bar reach is useful
  • You are comfortable handling a longer cutting attachment

The 16-inch version does not have a larger engine or greater power output. Its engine specification is identical to the 14-inch version.

35.8 cm³ STIHL 2-MIX engine

The MS 182 is powered by a 35.8 cm³ STIHL 2-MIX two-stroke engine producing 1.6 kW / 2.2 hp.

STIHL 2-MIX technology uses a four-channel combustion design to improve the mixing of fuel and air before ignition. This provides strong cutting performance while helping reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions compared with older conventional STIHL two-stroke engine designs of a similar output.

The engine complies with current EU Stage V emissions requirements.

Single-lever operation and easier restarting

The main starting and operating functions are controlled using STIHL’s combi lever.

Only one starting position is required. When the engine is stopped, the lever automatically returns to the normal operating position, making it easier to restart a warm saw after a short interruption.

The standard MS 182 uses a conventional pull-start system. Customers who want reduced starting effort should compare the STIHL MS 182 C-BE, which adds STIHL ErgoStart.

Side-mounted chain tensioning

The saw chain is adjusted using a tensioning screw positioned through the side of the sprocket cover.

This allows the chain to be adjusted without working directly beside the sharp chain teeth. The combination tool supplied with the chainsaw is used to loosen the sprocket-cover nut and adjust the tension.

Chain tension should be checked:

  • Before each use
  • After fitting a new chain
  • During longer working sessions
  • Whenever the chain no longer sits correctly against the underside of the guide bar

Always switch off the engine, allow hot components to cool and wear protective gloves before checking or adjusting the chain.

3/8″ P saw chain

The MS 182 uses a narrow-kerf 3/8″ P cutting attachment designed to provide efficient cutting performance from a domestic petrol chainsaw.

The compatible 14-inch and 16-inch cutting systems use a 1.3 mm Picco Micro 3 chain.

Replacement chains are available in Masseys’ chainsaw chain range. The required chain differs according to the selected guide-bar length, so confirm whether your saw has a 14-inch or 16-inch bar before ordering.

Anti-vibration system

Internal spring and buffer elements reduce the amount of engine and cutting vibration transmitted to the front and rear handles.

This can make the chainsaw more comfortable to control during longer firewood-cutting sessions. It does not remove all vibration, so regular breaks and safe working practices remain important.

Compensating carburettor

The carburettor compensator helps maintain consistent engine performance, fuel use and exhaust quality as the air filter gradually becomes contaminated.

This allows the chainsaw to continue operating effectively for longer between air-filter cleaning intervals. The filter should still be inspected and maintained according to the operating instructions.

Tool-free fuel and oil caps

The fuel and chain-oil tanks use bayonet-style caps that can be opened and closed without a separate tool.

The transparent chain-oil tank allows the lubricant level to be checked quickly before and during work.

The caps must always be closed fully before starting the engine.

Fuel and chain oil requirements

The MS 182 requires two separate fluids:

  • A 50:1 petrol and two-stroke engine-oil mixture for the engine
  • Dedicated chainsaw chain oil for lubricating the guide bar and saw chain

For self-mixed fuel, use fresh suitable petrol with approved STIHL two-stroke engine oil at the correct 50:1 ratio.

STIHL MotoMix can also be used as a ready-mixed 50:1 fuel. It is ethanol-free, uses STIHL HP Ultra oil and can be stored significantly longer than ordinary self-mixed petrol.

The guide bar and chain require separate STIHL chainsaw chain oil. Two-stroke engine oil must not be used in the chain-oil tank.

Fuel and chain oil are not included with the chainsaw unless specifically stated in the selected offer.

MS 172 vs MS 182 vs MS 212

Model Best suited to Engine Power Position in range
STIHL MS 172 Occasional to moderate domestic cutting 31.8 cm³ 1.4 kW Lighter homeowner option
STIHL MS 182 Regular firewood and larger property maintenance 35.8 cm³ 1.6 kW Mid-range homeowner saw
STIHL MS 212 More demanding and frequent domestic cutting 38.6 cm³ 1.8 kW Most powerful saw in this homeowner series

The MS 182 is the middle choice: more capable than the MS 172, but lighter and less expensive than moving directly to the MS 212.

MS 182 or MS 182 C-BE?

The standard MS 182 and MS 182 C-BE use the same 35.8 cm³ engine and offer the same core cutting performance.

Feature MS 182 MS 182 C-BE
Engine 35.8 cm³, 1.6 kW 35.8 cm³, 1.6 kW
Starting Standard pull start STIHL ErgoStart
Chain tensioning Side-mounted, tool adjusted Tool-free Quick Chain Tensioning
Best choice for Customers seeking the lower purchase price Customers prioritising easier starting and adjustment

Choose the standard MS 182 when you are comfortable using a conventional starter rope and combination tool.

Choose the MS 182 C-BE when reduced starting effort and tool-free chain adjustment justify the additional cost.
