Description
STIHL HLA 66 cordless long-reach hedge trimmer
The STIHL HLA 66 is a lightweight professional cordless long-reach hedge trimmer designed for maintaining tall hedges, wide hedge tops, shrubs and ground-cover plants. Its 205 cm overall length, 50 cm double-sided blade and adjustable cutter head provide useful reach without the weight, starting routine or direct exhaust emissions of a petrol machine.
The HLA 66 is part of the professional STIHL ALLPRO/AP battery system. It is particularly well suited to landscapers, grounds-maintenance teams, estate owners and demanding home users who need a robust long-reach hedge trimmer for frequent work.
Please note: this is a tool-only machine. A compatible STIHL AP battery and charger are not included and must be purchased separately.

Adjustable 50 cm cutting blade
The HLA 66 uses a 50 cm double-sided, double-edged and diamond-ground blade. The double-sided design allows efficient sweeping movements across the face and top of a hedge, while the 33 mm tooth spacing is intended for regular trimming and established hedge growth.
The cutter head adjusts through 115°, from approximately -45° to +70°. This allows the operator to select a practical angle for vertical hedge faces, flat or sloping hedge tops and low-growing shrubs.
A blade-tip protector helps reduce accidental contact with walls, paths and the ground. The supplied blade scabbard protects the cutting blade during storage and transport.
Professional STIHL AP battery system
The HLA 66 uses batteries from the professional STIHL ALLPRO/AP System. A compatible battery can be shared with many STIHL professional hedge trimmers, chainsaws, brushcutters, blowers, pole pruners and other cordless machines.
STIHL currently recommends the AP 200 S battery for the HLA 66. It provides a useful balance between machine weight, handling and working time, with a quoted runtime of up to approximately 144 minutes under test conditions.
A larger compatible battery may extend the available working time, but it will also increase the overall weight of the machine. For long-reach and above-shoulder work, battery weight should be considered alongside maximum runtime.

Who is the STIHL HLA 66 suitable for?
The HLA 66 is a strong choice for:
- Professional landscapers and gardeners
- Grounds-maintenance and facilities teams
- Estate and large-property maintenance
- Customers already using STIHL AP System batteries
- Regular trimming of tall or wide established hedges
- Work in residential and other noise-sensitive locations
- Users who want professional cordless operation without fuel mixing or a trailing cable
The HLA 66 is designed primarily for hedge maintenance. It should not be used as a substitute for loppers, a pole pruner or a chainsaw when removing thick, mature branches. Forcing heavy wood through the hedge-trimmer blade can damage the machine and produce a poor cut.
STIHL HLA 56 vs HLA 66 vs HLA 86
| Feature | STIHL HLA 56 | STIHL HLA 66 | STIHL HLA 86 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery system | STIHL AK System | STIHL ALLPRO/AP System | STIHL ALLPRO/AP System |
| Typical user | Domestic garden maintenance | Frequent or professional work | Professional work requiring extra reach |
| Blade length | 45 cm | 50 cm | 50 cm |
| Overall length | 210 cm | 205 cm | Approximately 260–330 cm |
| Shaft | Detachable | Fixed length | Telescopic |
| Best choice when | You need an accessible domestic machine for routine hedge care | You want professional AP System performance without a telescopic shaft | You regularly maintain exceptionally tall or deep hedges |
Choose the STIHL HLA 56 for routine domestic hedge maintenance and AK System compatibility.
Choose the HLA 66 when you need a professional AP System machine with a fixed-length shaft, good balance and a larger 50 cm blade.
Choose the STIHL HLA 86 when the telescopic 260–330 cm shaft is necessary for considerably taller hedges.
Masseys recommendation
The STIHL HLA 66 is best suited to customers who need professional cordless performance but do not require the additional length and weight of a telescopic model. Its fixed 205 cm shaft makes it more compact than the HLA 86, while the 50 cm blade and AP battery platform make it better suited to frequent, demanding work than the domestic HLA 56.
For most HLA 66 customers, the AP 200 S is the most balanced battery choice. It provides a substantial quoted working time without adding as much weight as the largest AP batteries—an important consideration when working with a long-reach machine.
Customers maintaining exceptionally tall hedges should compare the HLA 66 directly with the telescopic HLA 86 before ordering.
Frequently asked questions
Does the STIHL HLA 66 include a battery and charger?
No. The HLA 66 is supplied as a tool-only machine. A compatible STIHL AP battery and charger must be purchased separately unless you already own suitable equipment.
Which battery is recommended for the HLA 66?
STIHL recommends the AP 200 S. It provides a good balance of working time and overall machine weight, with a quoted runtime of up to approximately 144 minutes under test conditions.
Can the STIHL HLA 66 be used in the rain?
The machine is IPX4 rated and is designed for professional use in wet weather. Always use and store the machine, battery and charger in accordance with the relevant operating instructions.
Can the HLA 66 cut thick branches?
The HLA 66 is a hedge-maintenance machine rather than a branch-removal tool. It is designed for trimming hedge growth within the capacity of its cutting blade. Use loppers, a pole pruner or a suitable chainsaw for thick, mature wood.
What is the difference between the HLA 66 and HLA 86?
The HLA 66 has a fixed 205 cm shaft. The HLA 86 has a telescopic shaft that extends from approximately 260 to 330 cm. Choose the HLA 86 when substantially more reach is required.
Is the HLA 66 suitable for domestic users?
Yes. Although designed for professional and frequent use, it can also suit homeowners with extensive or demanding hedges, particularly those who already own compatible STIHL AP batteries.
