Description

STIHL BGA 86 professional cordless leaf blower

The STIHL BGA 86 is a powerful, lightweight cordless leaf blower developed for professional grounds maintenance, estates and demanding homeowners. It produces 15N of blowing force while weighing approximately 2.8kg without a battery, giving it the performance required for regular clearing without the fuel, starting procedure or direct exhaust emissions of a petrol blower.

The BGA 86 operates on the professional STIHL AP battery platform, now also presented by STIHL as the ALLPRO Battery System. This makes it especially suitable for customers who already use AP batteries in STIHL chainsaws, hedge trimmers, brushcutters, lawn mowers or other professional cordless machinery.

Please note: the BGA 86 is supplied as a tool-only machine. A battery and charger are not included.

Is the STIHL BGA 86 right for you?

The BGA 86 is designed for regular clearing work where the durability and battery compatibility of STIHL’s professional cordless system are more important than choosing the lowest-cost domestic blower.

The BGA 86 is particularly well suited to:

  • Professional landscapers and grounds-maintenance teams
  • Schools, sports grounds, hospitals and business premises
  • Estates, larger gardens and extensive paved areas
  • Clearing leaves, grass clippings, dust and loose debris
  • Working around car parks, pathways and landscaped areas
  • Locations where lower-noise cordless operation is preferable
  • Customers who already own STIHL AP batteries and chargers
  • Demanding homeowners who expect to use the blower frequently

Consider another model when:

  • You only need a blower for occasional light domestic tidying
  • You already own STIHL AK batteries rather than AP batteries
  • You want a machine that can also vacuum and shred leaves
  • You regularly clear exceptionally large quantities of heavy or compacted material
  • You require substantially more than 15N of blowing force

For general domestic work within the STIHL AK battery platform, compare the STIHL BGA 60 cordless leaf blower. For heavier professional clearing and greater peak output, consider the STIHL BGA 250 cordless blower.

Why Masseys recommends the STIHL BGA 86

At Masseys, we recommend the BGA 86 to customers who want a straightforward professional cordless blower without moving to a larger or substantially more powerful machine than their work requires.

Its principal strength is the balance between blowing performance, weight and control. The 15N output is sufficient for most routine professional clearing, including leaves, grass clippings and loose debris, while the infinitely variable trigger allows the operator to reduce the airflow around gravel, planted borders and other areas where full output would be unnecessary.

The BGA 86 is also a sensible choice for customers already invested in STIHL’s AP battery system. The same compatible battery can be moved between a wide range of professional STIHL tools, helping to reduce the number of separate battery platforms required.

There are two important limitations to understand. First, the machine is supplied without a battery or charger, so first-time AP System customers must budget for both. Second, although 15N is strong performance for a handheld blower, users regularly moving very large quantities of wet or compacted material may benefit from the higher-output BGA 250.

Masseys product assessment: reviewed by the Masseys garden machinery team in Woodville, Swadlincote. Product information checked July 2026.

15N blowing force with variable control

The STIHL BGA 86 produces 15N of blowing force with its standard round nozzle. This provides the output needed to clear leaves, grass cuttings, dust and general outdoor debris from lawns, paths, driveways, car parks and larger hard-surface areas.

The infinitely variable trigger allows the blowing force to be adjusted continuously rather than restricting the operator to a small number of preset speeds.

Lower output provides better control when working around:

  • Decorative gravel
  • Mulched beds
  • Recently planted areas
  • Doorways and confined spaces
  • Loose material that could otherwise be scattered

Full trigger output can then be used when moving larger leaf piles or heavier debris.

Professional STIHL AP and ALLPRO battery system

The BGA 86 is powered by batteries from STIHL’s professional AP platform, which STIHL now also refers to as the ALLPRO Battery System.

AP batteries are used across a broad range of professional STIHL cordless machinery. Customers operating several compatible tools can share batteries and chargers between machines rather than purchasing a separate power system for each product.

The BGA 86 cannot use batteries from STIHL’s domestic AK System. AP and AK batteries are separate platforms and are not interchangeable.

Which battery should you use?

STIHL recommends the AP 300 S battery for the BGA 86. It offers a practical balance of working time, weight and tool balance for frequent use.

STIHL publishes a working-time range of up to approximately 150 minutes at reduced output and approximately 26 minutes at maximum output with the AP 300 S. Actual working time will depend heavily on trigger position, battery condition, temperature, material being moved and working technique.

For jobs where maximum output is used continuously, the lower runtime figure is the more appropriate planning guide. Operators who need uninterrupted working should consider keeping a second charged battery available.

View the available STIHL battery chargers or contact Masseys for advice on matching the battery and charger to your working schedule.

Three-stage adjustable blower tube

The blower tube can be adjusted between three length settings. This allows the nozzle position to be matched more closely to the operator’s height and working posture.

Keeping the nozzle at an appropriate distance from the ground improves comfort and helps prevent unnecessary loss of blowing performance caused by holding the tube too high above the surface.

Round nozzle supplied as standard

The BGA 86 is supplied with a round nozzle for general clearing work. Its broad airflow is well suited to moving leaves and loose material across lawns, paths and paved areas.

An optional flat nozzle can be purchased separately. The narrower outlet increases air speed and can provide more concentrated airflow when dealing with stubborn or wet material.

Comfortable single-handed operation

The controls are integrated into the single-handed multifunction handle, allowing the blower’s output to be regulated without changing grip.

The layout is suitable for both right-handed and left-handed users. The blower’s compact design and approximately 2.8kg tool weight also make it easier to manoeuvre around parked vehicles, street furniture, borders and other obstacles.

Total operating weight will depend on the AP battery fitted.

Constant Power performance

STIHL Constant Power electronics are designed to maintain consistent operating performance as the battery charge decreases.

This means the blower does not simply become progressively weaker throughout the charge in the way some battery-powered tools can. Working time will still depend on the battery and selected output, but blowing performance is electronically managed while sufficient battery capacity remains.

IPX4 splashwater protection

The BGA 86 is rated to IPX4 for splashwater protection and is designed for professional outdoor use, including work in wet conditions.

IPX4 does not mean that the blower or battery is fully waterproof. Do not submerge the equipment, clean it with a pressure washer or store it while wet. Always follow STIHL’s operating, cleaning and storage instructions.

Is the STIHL BGA 86 suitable for wet leaves?

Its 15N blowing force is suitable for many wet-leaf and heavier clearing tasks. The optional flat nozzle can provide a more concentrated, higher-speed airflow for stubborn material.

Is the BGA 86 a professional blower?

Yes. It forms part of STIHL’s professional AP/ALLPRO battery system and is intended for professional grounds work as well as demanding private use.

Can the BGA 86 vacuum or shred leaves?

No. It is a blower only. Customers who want to collect and shred leaves should choose a compatible leaf vacuum or vacuum shredder instead.

Can the BGA 86 be used left-handed?

Yes. The single-handed control layout is designed for both right-handed and left-handed operation.

Can the BGA 86 be used in the rain?

The blower has IPX4 splashwater protection and is designed for outdoor work in wet conditions. It is not fully waterproof and must be operated, cleaned and stored in accordance with STIHL’s instructions.

Is the BGA 86 more powerful than the BGA 60?

Both are rated at up to 15N, although they are designed for different users. The BGA 60 belongs to STIHL’s domestic AK System, while the BGA 86 belongs to the professional AP/ALLPRO platform and is intended for more frequent professional or estate use.
