Bird Brand Creoshield Timber Treatment 20L

A creosote-substitute wood treatment that keeps the traditional dark, rustic finish people want on fencing and outbuildings, without the smell and handling issues of old-style creosote.

Creoshield is Bird Brand’s modern alternative to traditional creosote — built to give exterior timber the same deep, rich colour and long-lasting protection, but with a lower odour and easier handling. It soaks into the wood grain rather than just sitting on the surface, so it protects from within against rot, mould, and wood-boring insects, as well as shielding against sun and rain. It’s the treatment Masseys recommends for anyone maintaining fencing, sheds, stables or agricultural buildings who wants that classic creosote look without the drawbacks of the real thing.

Key features

Creosote-style finish, without the creosote — Gives timber the same dark, traditional colour people associate with creosote, in a formula that’s easier to work with.

Deep-penetrating protection — Soaks into the timber rather than sitting on top, so the wood is protected from within, not just coated.

Lower odour, easier handling — A more refined formula than traditional creosote, with reduced smell and lower environmental impact.

Weatherproof — Resists UV and rain damage, so the finish and protection hold up across the seasons rather than fading after one summer.

Built-in pest and rot protection — Acts as a barrier against wood rot, mould, mildew, and wood-eating insects.

Works on rough-cut timber — Suited to fence posts, gates, sleepers and outbuildings — the surfaces that take the most weathering.

How to apply Creoshield

  1. Make sure the timber is clean, dry and free of dust, dirt or old coatings.
  2. Stir thoroughly before and during use for a consistent finish.
  3. Apply evenly with a brush or roller. A second coat deepens the colour and protection once the first has dried.
  4. Leave 6–12 hours between coats, and up to 48 hours before the timber is exposed to rain or heavy use.
  5. Clean brushes and equipment with white spirit or a suitable solvent.

Safety: for exterior use only. Wear gloves and protective clothing during application, and make sure there’s good ventilation if applying in an enclosed space such as a shed or barn interior.

FAQs

Is Creoshield the same as creosote? No — Creoshield is designed to give the same dark, traditional look as creosote, but with a lower-odour, more user-friendly formula that’s easier and safer to apply.

How many coats do I need? One coat gives protection; a second coat, applied once the first is dry, deepens both the colour and the level of protection.

How long before the timber can get wet? Allow up to 48 hours after the final coat before the timber is exposed to rain or heavy use.

Can I use Creoshield indoors? No — it’s for exterior timber only, and isn’t suitable for wood that will come into contact with people, animals, or food.

What colours does it come in? Dark, Light, and Black, so you can match or contrast with existing fencing, gates or outbuildings.

Is there a water-based version? Yes — Bird Brand also make Ecosote, a water-based wood preserver, if you’d rather avoid an oil-based product.

What size tin do I need? Coverage is roughly 6–8m² per litre depending on how porous the timber is, so a 20L tin covers a substantial run of fencing or a full shed — the 4L size suits smaller jobs like a single gate or small shed.
