A water-based wood preserver and woodworm killer in one product. Ready to use straight from the tin, dries clear, and works as both a standalone treatment and a primer before overcoating.

Bird Brand Superior Wood Preserver does two jobs most preservers split across two products: it protects sound timber long-term and actively eradicates existing woodworm and other wood-boring insects. It’s water-based and ready to use, so there’s no thinning or mixing required. The liquid itself looks white in the tin, but it penetrates deeply and dries to a clear, virtually invisible, odourless finish, which is why it works equally well left bare or as a preparation coat before painting, staining or varnishing. It’s built for exterior structural timber — facades, windows, exterior doors, sheds, fences and outbuildings — rather than for treating furniture inside your home.

Key features

Three active ingredients — IPBC controls blue stain and other discolouring fungi, Tebuconazole protects against wet rot, dry rot and fungal decay, and Permethrin prevents and eradicates wood-boring insects, including woodworm.

Dual-purpose treatment — Preserves sound timber and treats existing woodworm infestations in a single product, rather than needing a separate insecticidal treatment first.

Water-based formula — Ready to use with no thinning needed. Lower odour and easier clean-up than solvent-based preservers — tools rinse clean with warm soapy water, then a rinse in clear water, rather than white spirit.

Clear, odourless-when-dry finish — Looks white going on, but penetrates deeply and dries clear and odourless, so it doesn’t alter the timber’s appearance.

Water repellent — Contains water-repellent agents that help protect timber from moisture damage and extend its working life.

HSE approved — Approved under the Control of Pesticides Regulations for use as directed (HSE No. 10009).

Overpaintable — Can be over-painted, stained or varnished once dry, and works underneath Bird Brand Complete Decking Oil (Clear or Dark Brown) if you want to add colour afterwards.

How to apply it

• Brush: Apply 2 even coats, covering all faces, sides and joints. Pay particular attention to the end grain, which should be treated to full saturation.
• Spray: Use a coarse spray setting and avoid misting onto surrounding surfaces or property.
• Dip: Submerge for at least 15 minutes, making sure the end grain is fully saturated.

Shake well before and during use. Make sure timber is dry, clean and free of dust, dirt, or any existing paint or varnish before you start. Coverage varies with timber porosity and condition — check the product data sheet or label for exact yield per litre for your job. Drying time is typically 48–72 hours depending on temperature, humidity, and how absorbent the timber is; leave until the odour has fully gone and the timber is dry throughout before use.
