What is the STIHL pressurised water container used for?

The tank is used to provide a portable supply of water to a suitable cut-off machine during wet cutting.

Typical applications include cutting:

  • Concrete paving and blocks
  • Kerbstones
  • Brick and masonry
  • Roofing tiles
  • Natural stone
  • Asphalt and similar construction materials

The connected machine, cutting wheel and intended material must all be approved for wet cutting. Always follow the operating instructions supplied with the cut-off machine and cutting wheel.

Who is this water tank best suited to?

The manual STIHL water tank is a practical choice for tradespeople and experienced users who need a mobile water supply but do not require an automatic battery-powered pump.

It is particularly suitable for:

  • Builders and general construction trades
  • Landscapers and hardscapers
  • Groundworkers and utilities contractors
  • Roofers cutting suitable tiles
  • Occasional site-based wet cutting
  • Locations without an accessible water connection
  • Users who prefer a straightforward system without batteries

Consider the STIHL WSA 40 instead when:

  • You carry out wet cutting frequently throughout the working day
  • You want the pressure maintained automatically
  • You want to reduce interruptions for manual pumping
  • Adjustable battery-powered pressure is valuable to your work

Why Masseys recommends the STIHL manual water tank

At Masseys, we recommend this tank for customers who need a dependable mobile water supply without the additional cost and charging requirements of a battery-powered pump.

Its main advantage is simplicity. Fill the 10-litre container with suitable clean water, close the tank securely, pressurise it using the hand pump and connect the supplied coupling to a compatible cut-off machine.

For occasional or intermittent cutting, periodic manual pumping is usually a reasonable compromise and keeps the setup straightforward. There is no battery to charge, no charger to transport and no electrical pump system to manage.

The limitation is that tank pressure will reduce during use. Longer or repeated cutting tasks may require the operator to stop and restore the pressure manually. Professional users carrying out frequent wet cutting may therefore find the STIHL WSA 40 cordless water tank more convenient.

How does the manual pressure tank work?

  1. Position the empty tank on a stable surface.
  2. Release any existing pressure before opening it.
  3. Fill the container with suitable clean water without exceeding its stated capacity.
  4. Secure the lid and pump assembly correctly.
  5. Use the hand pump to build operating pressure.
  6. Connect the supplied coupling to the compatible cut-off machine water inlet.
  7. Check the hose and connections for leaks.
  8. Open and regulate the connected machine’s water supply as instructed.
  9. Restore pressure manually when the water flow begins to decrease.

The tank must not be opened while it remains pressurised. Release the pressure safely before refilling, disconnecting or carrying out any inspection.

10-litre water capacity

The container holds up to 10 litres of water, providing a useful mobile supply for cutting tasks away from a convenient tap or hose connection.

A full tank is substantially heavier than an empty one. Use the recessed grip carefully, maintain secure footing and consider the manual-handling requirements when transporting the filled container around a worksite.

Manual hand-pump pressurisation

Pressure is produced by operating the integrated hand pump. This means that the tank does not require a battery, charger or electrical supply.

Because it is a manually pressurised system, the operator may need to pump the tank again during longer work as the pressure and water level decrease.

Maximum pressure limit of 3 bar

The container has a stated maximum pressure limit of 3 bar. Do not exceed this limit or modify the pump, tank, hose or pressure components.

Inspect the tank, seals, hose and coupling before each use. Do not operate the container when any pressure-containing component appears damaged, excessively worn or insecure.

Large covered filling opening

The large funnel-shaped filling opening is designed to make the tank easier to fill on site. Its cover helps protect the opening from loose site debris when the container is not being filled.

Use suitable clean water and avoid allowing grit or debris to enter the container, hose or connected cut-off machine water system.

Stable base and recessed carrying grip

The broad base helps the tank remain stable when it is placed on a reasonably level surface. A recessed grip assists with carrying, lifting and positioning the container.

Position the tank where it will not create a trip hazard or be exposed to moving machinery, vehicles, falling materials or the direct path of cutting debris.

Standard coupling included

The tank is supplied with a standard coupling for connection to compatible STIHL cut-off machine water systems.

Check that the coupling is correctly seated and that the hose is free from damage, kinks and leaks before starting work.

Compatible STIHL cut-off machines

STIHL describes this tank as suitable for its cut-off machine range. Compatible machines must have the correct water connection and be used with an appropriate wet-cutting wheel.

Popular STIHL cut-off machines available from Masseys include:

Confirm compatibility with Masseys before ordering when using an older machine, a non-standard coupling or equipment from another manufacturer.

Wet-cutting and dust-control guidance

Water supplied to an approved wet-cutting system helps reduce airborne dust and cool the cutting wheel. It does not eliminate all dust or respirable crystalline silica.

Before starting work:

  • Complete a suitable risk assessment
  • Follow the cut-off machine instruction manual
  • Use a cutting wheel approved for the material and wet cutting
  • Check that the water jets and connections are clear
  • Wear the required eye, hearing, hand, foot and respiratory protection
  • Keep other people away from the cutting area
  • Plan for the safe control and removal of slurry

Water suppression is one part of the required dust-control system. It must not be presented as making silica-generating work completely dust-free.

Frequently asked questions

How much water does the STIHL tank hold?

It has a maximum capacity of 10 litres.

Does the tank need a mains-water connection?

No. Once the container has been filled, it provides a mobile supply without remaining connected to a tap or mains-water hose.

Is the pump automatic?

No. The standard tank uses a manual hand pump. The operator creates pressure before use and may need to repressurise the tank during longer work.

What is the maximum pressure?

STIHL states a maximum pressure limit of 3 bar.

Is a hose and coupling included?

Yes. The tank is supplied with a hose and standard coupling for suitable STIHL cut-off machine water connections.

Does wet cutting remove all silica dust?

No. Water suppression can greatlyHL cut-off machine water connections.

Does wet cutting remove all silica reduce the amount of airborne dust, but it does not capture all respirable silica. Suitable RPE and other controls may still be required.

Can it be used with the STIHL TS 410 and TS 420?

Yes, these machines have suitable water-supply systems for approved wet cutting. Check the connected machine, wheel and coupling before use.

Can it be used with cordless STIHL cut-off saws?

It can supply compatible cordless STIHL TSA machines that have the appropriate water connection, including models such as the TSA 230 and TSA 300.

What is the difference between this tank and the WSA 40?

This tank is pressurised manually. The WSA 40 uses an AS 2-powered electric pump to apply and maintain pressure automatically.

Can the tank be opened while pressurised?

No. Release all pressure safely before opening, refilling, inspecting or disconnecting the container.

Is this a pressure washer?

No. It is a mobile water-supply tank for suitable cut-off machine wet-cutting systems. It is not designed for pressure-washing surfaces.
