Surface Preparation:

Ensure the wood surface is clean, dry, and frost-free, with a moisture content of no more than 20%. The oil is ready to use and should not be thinned. Stir well with a flat stick before application. For best results, sand surfaces to a maximum of P120 grit; finer sanding will reduce absorbency. For absorbent wood, apply the first coat on all sides before installation. Fresh, ingredient-rich woods like Cedar, Teak, Mahogany, or Iroko should be weathered before application to improve absorbency. Please refer to the website’s “Suitability” section for more details.

For renovation, thoroughly clean any old microporous stains, sand lightly if necessary, and use Osmo Wood Reviver Power-Gel to refresh greyed wood. Completely remove old paint and lacquers. When sanding, use a dust mask and avoid sanding finer than P120 grit. Weather ingredient-rich wood after sanding to further improve absorbency.

Softwoods, like Pine or Spruce, are more susceptible to issues like blue stain, rot, and insects; pre-treat these with Osmo WR Base Coat if possible.

Application Method:

Apply thinly with an Osmo Flat Brush or Microfibre Roller along the wood grain. Allow approximately 12 hours for drying in a well-ventilated area, then apply the second coat. Alternatively, use UV-Protection Oil Extra Clear for the second coat. For color-treated or renovated surfaces, one coat is usually sufficient on a clean, dry surface.

Osmo UV-Protection Oil Tints Light Red Cedar 2.5L Top Tips:
  • Stir thoroughly before application to avoid patchiness.
  • Sand to P120 grit for optimal absorption.
  • Ingredient-rich woods (e.g., Cedar, Teak, Mahogany) should weather for 12 weeks before application to improve absorbency. If the wood greys during weathering, use Osmo Wood Reviver Power Gel to restore color.
  • Avoid over-application, which can lead to visible white pigments, especially on textured surfaces. Remove excess before drying.
  • UV-Protection Oils work best on vertical surfaces. For horizontal surfaces, apply at an incline to allow water runoff.
  • Ensure proper ventilation to maintain drying times.
  • UV-Protection Oil delays greying up to 12 times longer than untreated wood.
  • Active biocides help protect the coating against mold, algae, and fungal growth.
  • Natural tannins in woods like Oak and Chestnut may cause discoloration. Wipe any tannin spots with a damp cloth. Darker tints can help mask this staining.
  • Some woods, such as Larch, contain water-soluble extractives that may leach out with weathering. A trial application is always recommended.
