Osmo Polyx-Oil Effect Raw 2.5L

Osmo Polyx-Oil Effect Raw 2.5L is the larger tin size of Osmo’s popular 3044 Raw hardwax oil, designed for protecting light-coloured interior wood while keeping the surface looking pale, natural and freshly sanded.

Ideal for larger flooring projects, full rooms, furniture making and interior joinery, this transparent matt finish helps reduce the darker “wet look” often created by clear oils. Instead, it gives oak, pine, spruce, ash, beech and other light woods a subtle raw wood appearance with durable everyday protection.

If you want a hardwearing finish that protects the timber without making it look heavily coated, Osmo Polyx-Oil Effect Raw 2.5L is an excellent choice.

Why Choose the 2.5L Tin?

The 2.5L size is best suited to larger interior wood projects where a 750ml tin may not be enough. It is especially useful for flooring, multiple pieces of furniture, larger panels, doors and trade jobs where consistent coverage and finish matter.

  • Better suited to larger rooms and flooring projects
  • Covers approximately 75m² with one coat on smooth prepared wood
  • Ideal when applying two thin coats to new or freshly sanded timber
  • Helps achieve a consistent finish across bigger surface areas
  • Suitable for professional and DIY use

Natural Raw Wood Effect with Hardwearing Protection

Many clear wood oils deepen the colour of timber and leave it looking warmer, darker or freshly wetted. Osmo Polyx-Oil Effect Raw 3044 is designed to reduce that effect on light-coloured woods.

The lightly white-pigmented formula helps retain the pale tone of sanded timber, making it ideal for modern interiors, Scandinavian-style finishes and projects where you want the wood to look clean, bright and natural.

Unlike a surface varnish, Osmo Polyx-Oil Effect Raw works by combining natural oils and waxes to protect the wood from within and at the surface. The result is a durable, breathable finish that stands up well to everyday domestic use while keeping the texture and character of the timber visible.

Best Uses for Osmo Polyx-Oil Effect Raw 2.5L

Use this product on light-coloured interior wood where you want a protected finish without a strong colour change.

  • Oak flooring
  • Pine floorboards
  • Light wooden furniture
  • Internal doors
  • Wooden panels
  • Interior joinery
  • Workpieces and craft projects
  • Light-coloured woods such as oak, ash, beech, spruce, pine and larch

Always apply a small test area first, especially when working with unfamiliar timber, darker wood, smoked oak, fumed oak or wood with strong colour variation.

Coverage and Drying Time

  • Coverage: approximately 30m² per litre with one coat
  • 2.5L tin coverage: approximately 75m² with one coat
  • Recommended coats: two thin coats on new or freshly sanded wood
  • Drying time: approximately 24 hours per coat with good ventilation
  • Finish: transparent matt / raw wood effect
  • Use: interior light-coloured wood only

Coverage can vary depending on the wood species, surface preparation, sanding grade and absorbency of the timber. Rough, open-grained or highly absorbent wood may require more product.

Application Guide

For the best finish, make sure the wood is clean, dry and frost-free before application. Remove old paints, lacquers and varnishes completely. Previously oiled wood should be cleaned and prepared before recoating.

Sand the surface carefully before applying. As a guide, use a final sanding grade of P120–150 for flooring and P180–240 for furniture.

Stir the tin thoroughly before use. Do not thin.

Apply very thinly and evenly along the wood grain using an Osmo brush, floor brush or microfibre roller. Spread the product well and avoid leaving visible white pigment on the surface. Too much product can create a pale or chalky appearance, especially on darker or reddish timber.

Allow the first coat to dry for approximately 24 hours with good ventilation, then apply a second thin coat. For renovation of an already oiled surface, one thin coat is usually sufficient if the wood is clean, dry and in good condition.

Important Suitability Advice

Osmo Polyx-Oil Effect Raw is designed for light-coloured wood. It is not usually the best choice for dark, reddish, smoked or fumed timbers because the white pigment may become visible and create a chalky look.

For darker hardwoods or extractive-rich woods such as wenge, merbau or jatoba, a different Osmo product may be more suitable. Always test before applying to the full surface.

Osmo Polyx-Oil Effect Raw 2.5L vs 750ml

Choose the 2.5L tin if you are treating a larger floor area, multiple pieces of furniture, a full room or a trade project. Choose the smaller Osmo Polyx-Oil Effect Raw 750ml for smaller furniture, sample areas, touch-ups or smaller DIY projects.

FAQs

What is Osmo Polyx-Oil Effect Raw 2.5L used for?

Osmo Polyx-Oil Effect Raw 2.5L is used to protect light-coloured interior wood while helping it keep a pale, raw and freshly sanded appearance. It is suitable for wooden floors, furniture, doors, panels and interior joinery.

Is Osmo Polyx-Oil Effect Raw suitable for oak flooring?

Yes. It is suitable for light-coloured oak flooring and helps protect the wood while reducing the darker wet-look effect often caused by clear oils. Test first on smoked, fumed or darker oak.

Does Osmo 3044 Raw make wood look white?

It is designed to give a subtle raw wood effect, not a solid white finish. However, because it contains a small amount of white pigment, applying too much product or using it on darker timber can leave a chalky appearance.

How much does a 2.5L tin cover?

A 2.5L tin covers approximately 75m² with one coat on smooth, prepared wood. For new or freshly sanded wood requiring two coats, total finished coverage will be lower.

How many coats should I apply?

Apply two thin coats on new, untreated or freshly sanded wood. For refreshing a previously oiled surface, one thin coat is usually enough if the surface is clean, dry and sound.

How long does Osmo Polyx-Oil Effect Raw take to dry?

Drying time is approximately 24 hours per coat under normal conditions with good ventilation. Cold temperatures, high humidity or over-application can extend drying time.

Can I use Osmo Polyx-Oil Effect Raw on dark wood?

It is not recommended for most dark, reddish, smoked or fumed woods because the white pigment may show on the surface. Always test first before applying to the full area.

Is Osmo Polyx-Oil Effect Raw hardwearing?

Yes. It provides a durable hardwax oil finish that is water-repellent, dirt-resistant and abrasion-resistant, making it suitable for floors, furniture and other interior wood surfaces.
