Description
STIHL RMA 448 PV cordless lawn mower
The STIHL RMA 448 PV is a powerful 46cm self-propelled cordless lawn mower for medium-sized and larger lawns. It is particularly well suited to homeowners, estates, grounds teams and demanding users who want longer cordless mowing times without relying on petrol or a mains cable.
Unlike the domestic STIHL RMA 448 V, the RMA 448 PV operates on the professional STIHL AP battery platform, now also described by STIHL as the ALLPRO System. It has two active battery slots and automatically changes from the first battery to the second when the first is depleted.
With the recommended STIHL AP 300 S battery, STIHL quotes coverage of up to approximately 510m² from one battery or 1,020m² when two AP 300 S batteries are installed. This makes the RMA 448 PV a strong option for larger lawns and longer mowing sessions.

Who is the STIHL RMA 448 PV best suited to?
The RMA 448 PV is best suited to customers who need more mowing capacity and battery management than a typical domestic cordless mower provides.
It is particularly suitable for:
- Medium-sized and larger domestic lawns
- Large, relatively open mowing areas
- Longer mowing sessions where battery changes would be inconvenient
- Gardens with appropriate gentle slopes
- Estate, grounds and property-maintenance work
- Existing users of STIHL AP System batteries
- Customers replacing a self-propelled petrol mower
- Locations where lower noise and zero exhaust emissions at the machine are important
Another mower may be more appropriate when:
- Your lawn is small, narrow or contains numerous confined sections
- You only own STIHL AK domestic batteries and do not intend to build an AP System
- You need a rear roller to create prominent lawn stripes
- You would benefit from the wider 51cm deck of the STIHL RMA 453 PV
Why Masseys recommends the RMA 448 PV
At Masseys, we recommend the RMA 448 PV for customers who want the manageable dimensions of a 46cm mower but need substantially greater battery capacity than the domestic RMA 448 V can provide.
The two active battery slots are one of its most useful features. When two charged batteries are installed, the mower automatically changes to the second battery when the first is empty. You do not need to stop, open the battery compartment and manually reposition the batteries part-way through mowing.
We also think the 46cm deck is a good compromise. It is wide enough to cover an open lawn efficiently but remains more manoeuvrable than the larger 51cm STIHL RMA 453 PV. This can make the RMA 448 PV the better choice when the lawn is substantial but still contains paths, borders, trees or other obstacles.
The main consideration is cost. The mower is supplied without a battery or charger, and two AP 300 S batteries are needed to achieve the quoted maximum 1,020m² coverage. Customers with a smaller domestic lawn may find the STIHL RMA 448 V more economical.

Two active batteries with automatic switchover
The RMA 448 PV has two working battery slots. When two charged AP batteries are installed, the mower draws power from one battery and then automatically switches to the second when required.
This sequential battery discharge system allows you to continue mowing without stopping to exchange batteries manually. It is especially valuable on larger lawns, commercial properties and grounds where uninterrupted working is more important than minimising the mower’s purchase price.
STIHL quotes the following maximum coverage with the recommended AP 300 S battery:
- One AP 300 S battery: up to approximately 510m²
- Two AP 300 S batteries: up to approximately 1,020m²
These are maximum manufacturer estimates rather than guaranteed mowing areas. Long, thick or wet grass, a low cutting height, slopes and frequent use of the powered drive can reduce the area covered.
Digital handlebar display and controls
A digital human-machine interface is built into the mower’s mono-handlebar. The display provides useful information without requiring you to stop and inspect the battery compartment.
Depending on the selected operating setup, the interface can display:
- Battery charge information
- The selected operating mode
- The maximum drive-speed setting
- Operating and fault indicators
The controls also allow relevant mower settings to be adjusted directly from the handlebar.
Variable-speed self-propelled drive
The RMA 448 PV uses STIHL Vario wheel drive. Its forward speed can be adjusted from approximately 2.0 to 4.5km/h, allowing you to match the mower’s pace to the lawn and your preferred walking speed.
You can reduce the speed when turning, following curved borders or working around trees and garden furniture, then increase it across a long, open section of lawn.
The powered drive reduces the effort required to move a 28kg mower and is particularly useful during longer mowing sessions and on appropriate gentle inclines.
Four different ways to manage the grass
The STIHL RMA 448 PV provides four mowing configurations without requiring a separate mower for different lawn conditions.
Cut and collect
Use the 52-litre grass collection box when you want to remove the clippings and leave a tidy finish. A fill-level indicator helps show when the collector needs to be emptied.
Cut and drop
Remove the collection box to allow the clippings to discharge behind the mower. This can be useful when a collected finish is unnecessary.
Side discharge
The integrated side-discharge flap directs the cut grass away from the deck. Side discharge can be particularly useful when the grass has become too long to collect efficiently.
Mulching
In mulching mode, the multi-blade cuts the grass into finer particles and returns them to the lawn. Mulching works best when the lawn is cut regularly and only a modest amount of growth is removed during each mow.
46cm polymer cutting deck
The 46cm cutting width allows the RMA 448 PV to cover open areas efficiently without becoming as cumbersome as a wider 51cm or 53cm mower in more complicated gardens.
Its double-layered polymer housing is designed to be durable, corrosion resistant and resistant to ultraviolet light. The polymer construction also avoids the rust risk associated with an unprotected steel deck.
Cutting height is adjusted centrally between 20 and 100mm, allowing the mowing height to be changed from one control point.
52-litre folding grass collection box
The mower is supplied with a 52-litre folding grass collector. Its two-part design opens to make the collected grass easier to empty, while the fill-level indicator shows when the box is approaching capacity.
Air outlets are positioned to direct the discharged air towards the ground rather than towards the operator.
Comfort mono-handlebar
The mono-comfort handlebar is attached on one side, leaving clearer access to the grass collection box. This makes the collector easier to remove and replace than it can be on a mower with a conventional cross-braced handle.
The handlebar can be adjusted to suit the operator’s height without tools and folded for more compact transport or storage.
Consistent and efficient cordless power
Constant Power
STIHL Constant Power electronics help the mower maintain consistent cutting performance as the battery charge decreases, rather than allowing performance to gradually decline throughout the charge.
Power Boost
Power Boost allows compatible STIHL batteries and the mower’s electronics to communicate so that the battery can supply the performance required for more demanding grass conditions.
Eco mode
Eco mode adapts motor speed to the mowing load. When maximum output is unnecessary, the mower can reduce energy consumption and extend the useful battery working time.
Flow-optimised blade
The flow-optimised blade is designed to reduce unnecessary air resistance, helping the mower use the available battery energy efficiently.
Battery and charger requirements
The STIHL RMA 448 PV is supplied as a tool-only mower. A battery and charger are not included.
STIHL recommends the AP 300 S battery. This 36V professional battery can also be used in a wide selection of compatible STIHL AP System chainsaws, hedge trimmers, strimmers, blowers and other cordless tools.
For users who mow regularly or need the fastest practical turnaround, a quick charger is usually more appropriate than a basic standard charger. Compare the available STIHL battery chargers or contact Masseys for advice on the most suitable battery and charger combination.
