Surface Preparation:

Ensure the wood is clean, dry, and frost-free, with a moisture content no higher than 20%. This Osmo UV-Protection Oil Tints Light Oak is ready to use—do not thin it. Stir thoroughly before applying. For best results, sand the wood to a maximum of P120 grit; finer sanding will reduce absorbency. If possible, apply the first coat to all sides before installation, especially on fresh wood with natural extractives (such as Cedar, Teak, Mahogany, or Iroko), which may require weathering to enhance absorbency.

For renovation, thoroughly clean any previous microporous stains, lightly sand if necessary, and use Osmo Wood Reviver Power-Gel to restore greyed or weathered wood. Completely remove any old paint or lacquer. When sanding, use a dust mask and avoid going finer than P120 grit. Weather ingredient-rich wood after sanding to improve absorbency.

Softwoods, like Pine or Spruce, are prone to issues such as blue stain, rot, and insects; pre-treating with Osmo WR Base Coat is recommended.

Application Method:

Using an Osmo Flat Brush or Microfibre Roller, apply the oil thinly along the wood grain and spread it evenly. Allow approximately 12 hours to dry in a well-ventilated area before applying a second coat. A second coat can also be applied with UV-Protection Oil Extra Clear. For color-treated or renovated surfaces, one coat on a clean, dry surface is usually sufficient.

Top Tips for Applying Osmo UV-Protection Oil Tints Light Oak 2.5L:
  • Stir thoroughly with a flat stick before use to avoid patchiness.
  • Sand surfaces to P120 grit for optimal absorption.
  • Allow ingredient-rich woods (e.g., Cedar, Iroko, Teak, Mahogany) to weather for 12 weeks before application to enhance absorbency. Use Osmo Wood Reviver Power Gel to restore color if the wood greys during weathering.
  • Avoid over-application; excess product may create visible white pigments, particularly on textured surfaces.
  • UV-Protection Oil performs best on vertical surfaces. For horizontal surfaces, apply at an incline to allow water runoff.
  • Adequate ventilation is necessary to ensure proper drying times.
  • The oil delays natural greying up to 12 times longer than untreated wood.
  • Active biocides in the formula protect the coating from mold, algae, and fungal attack.
  • Natural tannins in timbers like Oak or Chestnut may cause dark staining when exposed to moisture. Clean any tannin spots with a damp cloth to minimize discoloration.
