Hayter Hawk 43 AutoDrive 60V Cordless Lawn Mower

The Hayter Hawk 43 AutoDrive is a self-propelled 60V cordless rear-roller lawn mower that combines straightforward battery operation with the traditional striped finish for which Hayter is known.

Its 43cm cutting width makes it a practical choice for small to medium lawns, particularly where a compact mower would take too many passes but a larger professional-style machine would be unnecessarily heavy. The variable-speed drive moves the mower forward while you guide it, helping reduce effort and allowing you to select a pace that feels comfortable.

An integrated ribbed rear roller lays the grass in alternating directions to create visible lawn stripes. The lightweight polymer deck aids manoeuvrability, while push-button starting removes the need for fuel, pull cords or a trailing mains cable.

This complete kit includes a Hayter 60V 4.0Ah battery and 2.0A standard charger. Once the battery is charged and the mower has been prepared in accordance with the instructions, it is ready for regular domestic lawn maintenance.

Is the Hayter Hawk 43 Right for Your Lawn?

The Hayter Hawk 43 AutoDrive is best suited to homeowners who want a striped lawn, self-propelled assistance and cordless convenience without stepping up to the size and weight of a premium Hayter Harrier.

It is a particularly strong choice if:

  • You maintain a small or medium lawn regularly
  • You want a classic striped finish
  • You prefer a self-propelled mower to a push model
  • You want to replace a corded electric or compact petrol mower
  • You value easy starting and lower routine maintenance
  • You have limited storage space in a shed or garage
  • You want a mower that remains manageable around borders and garden features

A larger Hayter Harrier may be more appropriate if you have a more extensive lawn, require a heavier-duty machine or want the additional features and construction associated with Hayter’s premium range. For a smaller, lighter push mower, consider the Hayter Hawk 36 cordless lawn mower.

Key Features and Benefits

Variable-Speed Self-Propelled Drive

The Hawk 43 AutoDrive propels itself forward, so you guide the mower rather than supplying all the pushing force. Its variable-speed control allows the mowing pace to be adjusted to suit the operator and lawn conditions.

This is useful when mowing longer straight runs, working on gentle gradients or using the mower with a filling grass collector. Reducing the speed can provide more control in confined areas, while a faster comfortable pace helps cover open lawn efficiently.

Integrated Rear Roller for Lawn Stripes

The one-piece ribbed rear roller lays the grass in the direction of travel. Mowing adjacent passes in opposite directions creates the alternating light and dark bands associated with a traditionally striped British lawn.

For clearer stripes, mow reasonably straight overlapping lines, keep the blade sharp and avoid cutting wet or heavily flattened grass. The appearance of the stripe will also depend on grass variety, health and cutting height.

43cm Cutting Width

A 43cm cutting width provides a useful balance between productivity and manoeuvrability. It covers more ground per pass than a compact 32–36cm mower while remaining manageable around borders, paths and common garden obstacles.

This makes the Hawk 43 a sensible step up for customers who find a smaller cordless mower too slow but do not need a much wider machine.

60V Cordless Power

The mower runs on Hayter’s 60V battery system, eliminating the need to store petrol or manage a mains cable. Starting is controlled by a button and handle control rather than a recoil cord.

The supplied 4.0Ah battery provides a complete mowing package and can be removed for charging and storage. Actual mowing coverage varies according to grass length, moisture, cutting height, lawn gradient, drive use, temperature and battery condition.

Power Boost for Demanding Grass

The mower’s additional power mode can be used when more blade performance is required, such as when encountering longer or heavier grass. Higher-output operation consumes battery energy more quickly, so it is best used when conditions require it rather than throughout every mowing session.

Lightweight Polymer Deck

The polymer cutting deck reduces weight and cannot rust in the same way as an untreated steel deck. Its lower weight contributes to easier turning and positioning compared with heavier premium roller mowers.

The deck should still be cleaned after use. Remove the battery and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions before clearing grass from beneath the mower.

Vertical Storage

The Hawk 43 can be stored vertically, significantly reducing the amount of floor space it occupies compared with leaving the handle and deck in their normal operating position.

This is particularly useful in compact sheds and garages. Always prepare the mower for storage in accordance with the manual, remove the battery where instructed and keep the battery and charger in a dry, appropriate environment.

Push-Button Starting

Battery operation removes the pull-cord starting routine associated with many petrol mowers. Fit a charged battery, complete the safety-start procedure and use the handle controls to operate the mower.

There is no petrol to purchase or store, and routine ownership avoids petrol-engine tasks such as oil changes, spark-plug replacement and carburettor maintenance.

Why Masseys Recommends the Hayter Hawk 43

At Masseys, we recommend the Hayter Hawk 43 AutoDrive to customers who want a genuine rear-roller striped finish and self-propelled assistance in a mower that is lighter and simpler than a traditional petrol roller machine.

The Hawk 43 occupies a useful position in the Hayter range. It is wider and less physically demanding than the push-operated Hawk 36, but it remains more manageable and accessible than the heavier, premium Harrier cordless models. For many ordinary family lawns, that balance is exactly what is required.

Our own experience with the mower has shown it to be a capable option for a regularly maintained lawn of around 300m², although coverage from a battery charge will always vary with grass and weather conditions. We particularly value the combination of its rear roller, variable-speed drive and additional power setting because these features address three common customer priorities: appearance, comfort and the ability to deal with changing grass conditions.

We would recommend choosing the Hawk 43 when the lawn is cut regularly and a clean striped finish is more important than heavy-duty work in frequently overgrown grass. Customers with a substantially larger area or more demanding conditions should compare it with the Hayter Harrier 41 Cordless and Hayter Harrier 48 Cordless.

Battery Runtime and Lawn Coverage

There is no single runtime or square-metre figure that applies to every garden. Battery use changes according to the load placed on the blade motor and drive system.

The main factors affecting coverage are:

  • Grass length, thickness and moisture
  • The selected cutting height
  • How much grass is removed in one pass
  • Use of the self-propelled drive
  • Use of the higher-power operating mode
  • Slopes, turns and uneven areas
  • Air temperature
  • Battery age, condition and state of charge

For efficient mowing, cut regularly, avoid removing more than roughly one-third of the grass blade in one session and use a higher cutting position when the lawn has become long. Damp or overgrown grass will normally reduce coverage and collection performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Hayter Hawk 43 self-propelled?

Yes. The Hayter Hawk 43 AutoDrive has a variable-speed self-propelled system. The mower supplies the forward drive while you guide it, and the speed can be adjusted to suit your walking pace and mowing conditions.

Does the Hayter Hawk 43 produce lawn stripes?

Yes. It has an integrated one-piece ribbed rear roller that bends the grass in alternating directions. Mowing straight adjacent passes in opposite directions produces the traditional striped appearance.

What size lawn is the Hayter Hawk 43 suitable for?

The Hawk 43 is designed for small to medium, regularly maintained domestic lawns. Its 43cm cutting width covers more ground than a compact mower while remaining manoeuvrable around common garden features. Battery coverage will vary with mowing conditions.

Does the Hayter Hawk 43 include a battery and charger?

Yes. This Hayter Hawk 43 kit includes one 60V 4.0Ah battery and one 2.0A standard charger.

What is the difference between the Hayter Hawk 43 and Hawk 36?

The Hawk 43 has a wider 43cm cutting width and self-propelled variable-speed drive. The Hawk 36 is narrower and hand propelled, making it better suited to smaller lawns where compact size and low weight are the main priorities.

What is the difference between the Hayter Hawk 43 and Harrier 41 Cordless?

Both are self-propelled cordless rear-roller mowers that produce stripes. The Hawk 43 is positioned as a lighter, more accessible machine with a polymer deck, while the Harrier 41 is a more substantial premium model with additional Harrier construction and features.

Can the Hayter Hawk 43 replace a petrol mower?

For many small and medium lawns, yes. It provides self-propelled assistance, a useful 43cm cutting width and a rear roller without petrol storage or routine engine maintenance. A petrol mower may remain more appropriate for prolonged cutting on very large or frequently overgrown areas.

How long does the Hayter Hawk 43 battery last?

Runtime varies rather than remaining fixed. Grass length, moisture, cutting height, use of the drive, use of the higher-power mode, gradients, temperature and battery condition all affect the area covered from one charge.

Can the Hayter Hawk 43 cut long or wet grass?

It can deal with changing grass conditions, and additional power can be selected when required. However, the cleanest cut, strongest collection and best battery efficiency are achieved on reasonably dry, regularly maintained grass. Very long grass should be reduced gradually from a higher cutting position.

Is the Hayter Hawk 43 suitable for slopes?

The self-propelled drive can reduce effort on gentle gradients. Suitability depends on the slope, ground conditions and manufacturer safety limits. Follow the operator manual, maintain secure footing and never use the mower on a gradient outside the approved limits.

Can the Hayter Hawk 43 be stored upright?

Yes. Its vertical-storage design reduces the floor area needed in a shed or garage. Prepare and position the mower exactly as described in the manufacturer instructions and store the battery and charger in suitable dry conditions.

Does a cordless Hayter mower need servicing?

A cordless mower avoids petrol-engine maintenance, but the blade, drive, roller, controls, battery, charger and general condition still require periodic checks. Blade sharpening and correct cleaning help preserve cutting and collection performance.

Can Masseys service the Hayter Hawk 43?

Masseys has an in-house garden machinery servicing and repair department. Contact the workshop before bringing in the mower to confirm current booking arrangements and the work required.

Had the mower on test from Hayter when it first came out. Really impressive! Cutting 300 sq/m on a charge easily (cutting once a week). Lawn mower has a rear roller for the stripe and a boost button for additional power if grass is long and wet.
