Boiled linseed oil has been the go-to finish for old timber and natural stone for generations, and Bird Brand’s version does the job without any fuss. It soaks into tired, weathered wood and brings the grain back to life, and it works just as well as a sealer on porous surfaces like slate, flagstones and terracotta tiles, where it helps keep moisture out. It’s not a surface coating like varnish — it’s absorbed into the material, which is why the finish looks and feels natural rather than plasticky.

How to use it
Make sure the surface is clean, dry and free of old wax, paint or finish before you start. Apply a generous coat with a brush or cloth, following the grain on timber, and let it soak in for 10–15 minutes. Wipe away any oil that hasn’t been absorbed — a surface left wet will stay tacky and attract dust. Leave to dry (typically 24–48 hours depending on temperature and ventilation) before a second coat if needed. Two to three thin coats give a better finish than one thick one.

Coverage: Approximately 10m² per litre on timber and porous stone, depending on how absorbent the surface is.

Safety note: Cloths or rags soaked in linseed oil can generate heat as the oil cures and have been known to combust spontaneously if left screwed up in a pile. Lay used cloths out flat outdoors to dry fully, or soak them in water in a metal container, before disposing of them.
