Stihl MS170 Chainsaw Information
The Stihl MS170 has a 30.1 cc engine that produces 1.2 kW / 1.6 hp and the body weighs 4.1 kg. The chainsaw features the environmentally friendly Stihl 2-MIX engine which provides plenty of torque and yet save around 20% on fuel compared to standard Stihl 2-stroke engines.
The Stihl MS170 chainsaw has a side chain tensioner which enables the chain to be easily tensioned. For safety, there is a chain brake and runs on a 3/8 PMMC3 chain.
Anti-vibration system:
Intense vibration at the handles of power tools can lead to longer-term effects of blood vessels in the hands and arms. Due to this, STIHL have therefore developed an effective anti-vibration system which significantly reduces vibrations at the handles.
Compensator:
This controller in the carburetor prevents the fuel-air mixture getting richer as the air filter becomes clogged. This allows the correct quantity of fuel to be delivered to the carburetor in the Stihl MS170 Chainsaw. As a result the fuel/air ratio in the combustion mixture is therefore constant and hence also the engine power. Therefore the filter doesn’t need to be cleaned until an appreciable drop in power occurs.
Ematic chain lubrication system:
The Ematic chain lubrication system ensures pinpoint lubrication of the saw chain links and guide bar rails. When used with STIHL OILOMATIC saw chain, it will provide maximum lubrication which means longer wear and less oil consumption. Therefore the Ematic system can reduce bar oil consumption up to 50%.
Single-lever master control:
All important functions such as start, choke, throttle and stop are all operated via a single lever. Therefore it is easy to operate.
Side chain tensioner:
The tensioning screw reachable on the side of chainsaw. Therefore there is no need for contact with the sharp saw chain.

Chainsaw Advice
Tensioning the saw chain –
- Shut off the engine and loosen the side nuts
- Hold the bar nose up and use a screwdriver to turn the tensioning screw clockwise until the chain fits snugly against the underside of the bar
- While still holding the bar nose up, tighten down the nuts firmly and check the nuts are tightened firmly before each use and during operation
- A new chain has to be retensioned more often than one that has been in use for some time
- Check chain tension frequently
- Frequently check side nuts are tightened firmly
Checking the chain tension –
- Shut off the engine and wear work gloves to protect your hands
- The chain must fit snugly against the underside of the bar and it must still be possible to pull the chain along the bar by hand
- The chain should never be sagging off the bar
- If necessary, re-tension the chain and check chain tension frequently.
